Shattenkirk

Outsider fan here. How's Shattenkirk been doing this year? I've heard noise he looks good, and is getting time on the PP, but not really producing. He's still producing at even strength, though. What do you guys see his stats being this year? How about his ceiling?

Points this year, probably in the range of 50, give or take. He performs consistently, but his points can be streaky. A hot streak or two in points (such as, if the Blues' powerplay starts clicking) could make a big difference.

His ceiling is a complementary first-pairing d-man, but will be the Blues' 2.5, basically. He'll get #2 minutes, but will only be on the first pairing when he's really hot or when he and Pietro are put together later in the game, when they're trailing.

As you'll see in that thread, he isn't a big hitter, but he isn't soft. He's actually kind of feisty, but we saw more of that last year, I think. And he's a lot better defensively than most people expected, and especially a lot better than Colorado fans' scouting report suggested.

He can use his speed, timing, poke checking, stealing the puck, and anticipation to break up plays. He will be a decent defender in his own end. He will gain strength and bulk, too, as he continues to mature. He WON'T be a liability in his own end as some offensive defencemen are.

Shattenkirk's defensive game has been great this year. I think it has been second pairing good.

Great hands too. He can dangle benders and snipe tenders when he needs to.

Not terrible, but not anything special. He doesn't really use it a lot, he is more of a finesse guy.

Does that make the Blues a poor-man's Red Wings?

Petro = poor man's Lidstrom
Shatty = poor man's Rafalski
Backes = poor man's Zetterberg
Oshie = poor man's Franzen
Perron = poor man's Datsyuk
etc...

I'll take a poor man's Cup....

The Blues' goaltending starts looking pretty good when you say it that way.

I am not sure he is a poor man's version of Rafalski. He already has accomplished more than Rafalski at the same age.

This, seems like almost every shot Shattenkirk takes (slap or wrist) gets on net, even when there is a ton of traffic. This alone makes me like him more than EJ. A big booming shot is useless if it never hits the net.

Shattenkirk has been great. His skating, vision, and passing are world-class. He also has an underrated wrist shot and is very solid defensively. He's turning into a good all-around d-man in the mold of a Dan Boyle IMO. I'm extremely impressed with him...he's been one of our best players all season.

One thing he does that is often overlooked is that he almost always holds the puck in the offensive zone, its been awhile since we had a dman who could consistantly hold it in, one of the most frustrating things about EJ was he could never hold the puck in.

Petro has done very well in that area as well.

Shattenkirk and Pie are two amazing talents who are only 22 and 21 years old.

That has been one of my frustrations with Cole, who I have to make allowances for since he's so young....but people who are already slotting him in as a top pairing partner for Pietro need to chill out. He's not ready for that responsibility yet, by a long sight.

I'll take a poor man's Cup....
Pietrangelo shoots right, Lidstrom shoots left
Backes shoots right, Zetterberg shoots left (different styles)
Oshie shoots right, Franzen shoots left (different styles)
Perron shoots right, Datsyuk shoots left

Shattenkirk is small, shoots right and is American, Rafalski was small, shot right and is American. They both play/played the same type of game. See the similarities?

Interesting tidbit from Bernie's article today.

Quote:
Since becoming a Blue, Shattenkirk ranks second among all NHL defensemen in points (35) and assists (31.) He's a plus 12. He's been a marvel.

He's been a huge pickup. The Blues have always been interested in him and I'm so glad they got him. He's a great talent.

When I saw him as the + in the EJ trade I laughed and didn't even care that we gave up Johnson or a 1st.

Yeah, no kidding. I had Stewart and Shattenkirk on my fantasy team before the trade.
