Paille had never been in trouble before it and got hammered with 4. Sawada broke his nose and Paille apologized as well. Not saying they are the same but that's probably what they will compare it to amongst the other incidents mentioned previously in the thread.

I expect 3 games.
The Paille hit happened when rule 48 included the "blindside" aspect. Now it doesnt. Maybe im interpreting this wrong though....I could be wrong LOL

edit: After reading this http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=368285 looks like im wrong. They only removed it so it could apply to more situations.

Unless they changed the rules, it is a max. of 5 games if you have a phone hearing.

It did but if you take that aspect out of it, the hits are very similar. Either way there is no excuse for it.

Out of curiosity, did any player come out and talk about the hit? I know Pacioretty said he won't comment until after the results are announced.

I think he's gonna get at least two games.

WhO's gonna get recalled from Hamilton ? DiSimeone or Leblanc ?

I don't want to see a D-man on the 4th line wing !!!!!!!

You will be seeing a dman on the 4th wing (most likely Weber) and its not a bad move if Markov comes back.

What a dysfunctional team !

No wonder they are playing .500 hockey and have lost 14% TV ratings on RDS.

What's taking so long for announcing the decision? Wasn't the phone call scheduled for 11 AM?

That is just awful. I think they owe you a nicer lunch than a sandwich. Nothings worse than non hockey fans pulling stuff like that.

You're actually kind of right before and after the edit.

Removing the directional language from the stated rule allows hits to the head to be penalized in more situations. Now the whole East/West or North/South debate doesn't matter as much as it did, neither does the "blindside" consideration.

What has replaced the directional focus on contact in rule 48 is consideration of the vulnerability of the player being checked when the checker commits to contact.

Specific to the Pacioretty hit, it's important to realize that Shanahan has made it clear that there is onus on the player receiving the hit not to put himself in a vulnerable position. This is something that wasn't explicit in these situations last season. If a player commits to a check before the receiving player puts himself in a vulnerable position, then the player throwing the hit isn't fully responsible for resulting contact to the head that occurs.

The way that the rules were written last year drastically changed the way Paille's hit was looked at from the way Pacioretty's will be.

In applying rule 48 last year, Campbell would have looked for:

1) Contact to the head.
2) The direction of the hit (East/West and coming from the blindside).
3) Other mitigating factors that are always considered, like history, the score, etc.

Shanahan's criteria (as I've stated earlier) are very different now, to the point that looking at the Paille example as precedence is irrelevant.

I wouldn't be surprised if Pacioretty gets suspended (I've said that I think it's a borderline play), but I would be shocked if he is suspended for 4 games.

Or it could just be that it's standard procedure to talk to the player beforehand, no?
