It must have something to do with the ball going out of the back of the end zone, as opposed to going over the sideline. If it went over the sideline I'm pretty sure it would have been our ball.
I don't understand the touchdown call either. I thought you couldn't fumble the ball forwards?

You can't intentionally fumble the ball forward to advance it.
As for the sideline--in the field it stays with the offense, but in the end zone it goes as a touchback (remember Beebee catching Lett?).
