Pacioretty gets 3 games for hit on Letang

Figured I'd start a new thread instead of adding this to the Letang Impact test thread.

Pacioretty suspended 3 games for last night's hit.

See Shanahan's video here. Very well explained.

Just mentioned it on the main main board. It might be 1 or 2 games too much.

Good ruling by Shanny. Main board is having a fit which is mildly amusing.

I would've been OK with 1 or 2 but it's an important message to send and it's the right call even if the refs and CBC commentators had their heads up their ass the whole time.

Lining a guy up is so tough, and especially a shifty player like the tang.

I guess in the new NHL it is on the player delivering the hit, but the part of me that played says cut to the middle and shoot the puck and you're fair game.

Elbow was down, no real lift or charge type angle....it's just so hard when a player is leading with his face to say make contact elsewhere.

All that said, I thought Shanny did a VERY good job outlining why he went with the suspension. So as much as my own opinion differs, keep it consistent and my gripe is only in opinion and not execution.

For Letang's sake though, i hope he learns as much as Max from the experience.

good call, 3 games is warranted as this is exactly one of the types of hits that they are trying to take out of the game. We are lucky, that sorta hit could easily result in Letang missing the rest of the season.

Did the video say they may have taken into account Pacioretty's hit on Eaton last season? He wasn't suspended or even fined for that hit, but just curious if maybe they looked at it?

If they are REALLY serious about getting rid of those headshots, that's the good decision. I think it was a minor penalty and that's it, but that's the hits they said they wanna get rid off. I just hope they'll be consistent, because right now, I'll admit I don't really follow their logic sometimes.

Before the ruling I was thinking 3-5 games, so I am fine with it.

Yeah, I thought 2 or 3 games is what it was going to be.

It was pretty cut and dry

I liked the video. Good points that Letang didn't move his head and Pac shifted his weight to his right skate. Not sure how else you can look at that.

This is where I think it's heading and I'm honestly in favor of it. I know some fans love the big blow up hits, but I prefer skill. By that I mean skill in passing, shooting, playmaking and defense. I know some would argue that big hits like that are a skill and I agree, I just don't care for it.

Keeping players safe and watching the skill that is on the ice is entertainment enough.

Having said that Shanahan needs to be more consistent with these rulings. Three games is probably one too many and some other hits have gone unpunished that fall into this category.

The video doesn't mention it. No ruling would ever openly take into account a play that didn't lead to a major penalty, match penalty or a suspension.

Thought that was Shanny's best decision. It was a well put together video. It sends a message but isn't ridiculous.

I'm fine with the number of games he got. It wasn't a vicious hit, but at the same time it's the kind of hit (to the head) they're trying to remove from the game.

Shanny is a moron and all but these videos are the best new thing to come out in recent memory...well done
BTW...Letang is a beast...alot of people do it but sacrificing the body to make a play is something special

Loving the videos. I still don't care for Shanny one bit, but making these videos at least explains the thought process very clearly.

When it first happened I thought it would be 2-5 games, originally thinking the high end because of the thought that Letang was seriously hurt. When Letang came back I figured it would shift to the low end. 3 is still on the lower end there, and Shanahan did take the broken nose into account...so that's very fitting in my opinion. Without the broken nose it's probably 2, with a more serious injury it's probably 5. With things the way they were, anything more than 3 would have been a bit too much in my opinion.

I just don't know how so many people are arguing that it should have been 0 (well, aside from it being a Canadiens player hitting a Penguin...so...actually, I can figure it out) considering not only was the principle point of contact the head, it was the only point of contact. Pacioretty did absolutely nothing to avoid the hit and everything to go through with it, even though he didn't have his body lined up. It was a dangerous play, period.

I'm just amazed at how quickly Letang was back out there. A broken nose is painful as hell, and to have a rod inserted to stabilize things...and to return after missing less than 4 minutes of ice time...absolutely ridiculous.

If it was Cooke, he'd be gone for 15 games.

Habs fans are hellbent on comparing this to the Malone hit, even though they're not the same.

Eh it's to be expected. Pacioretty is their best forward. Montreal could be in trouble if they go on another long losing streak.
