The difference between the ease at which each team enters the offensive zone is completely night and day. Caps need to do everything in their power to get the puck past the blue line, and once they do it's almost always one-and-done. The Blues break down our neutral zone pressure like it's nothing.
I hope this is the first thing Hunter tries to tackle.
Yeah, "Hey guys, let's try something new, you know when the puck's in our zone and we get it? Yeah, get it out" "Ohhhh, Bruce told us to just kind of drop pass it in front of the net" "Yeah, just go ahead and get it out of the zone for a little bit" "Oh, ok, weird. Never thought of that."
Agree. But I've been saying and still maintain that Dale needs to start from hockey 101 with these guys, reinforce the fundamentals, and build a commitment level. I surely didn't expect them to look much different this game than last.
shame how it worked out but it was cool to see the top line get 10-15 seconds with an offensive zone draw before giving way to the shutdown line against backes' line. much better than watch ovi stand around in the d zone for the following 35 seconds.
much better backskating and stickwork thru the neutral zone. broke up a couple lead or entry passes.
I'll say this... positional they were very sound that period. The team was giving up so many 3 on 2s and 2 on 1s the last few weeks. None of that so far, so that is a positive. Dumb turnover in our zone that led to the goal. Dale needs to teach these guys how to get the f out of our zone.
I think they are doing a lot better. They still have some things to do in the defensive zone, but they are going after pucks. I don't expect immediate change, but nice to see some effort. Playing at home helps too. Nice hit Ovy had near the end of the period.
