A center version of Lehtinen you say? Sign me the entire hell up.

I've been arguing that we need a big minute defensive center as much as we need more offensive talent, because having a dedicated match-up center would allow the secondary scorers to focus entirely on offense.

I know that fans would hate this, but I wonder if the Islanders are a team that the Sabres could couple Pegula's willingness to eat contracts to try and make the team better quicker.

The contract to eat: Rick DiPietro [9+ years left at $4.5M per]

To NYI: Roy

To Buf: Strome or Tavares & DiPietro

1 - DiPi is hurt and can't be traded.

2 - Strome and Tavares have very different values.

PHX doesn't do it for a multitude of reasons. Hanzal is a Tippett favorite and is useful against the other team's top center every night. Also, PHX just signed Hanzal to a five-year deal for a reason, so they're not going to trade a guy they locked in for a fixed price in exchange for a guy who's UFA summer 2013 and will likely be looking to break the bank. Next, Hanzal makes $2.5m next season, Roy makes $5.5m. The $3m difference is huge for a cash-strapped organization like Phoenix--and we'll proceed upon the assumption that they're in Glendale until we hear otherwise. Finally, in addition to all those reasons, they're also giving up a 1st rounder, which is currently in the top-15. The deal doesn't work from PHX's perspective.

In a vacuum it looks fine, but we get smaller and lighter in a top-9 that's already small and light. If we trade Staff, I'd like to get someone back with some size and bang.

With 3 ES pts in 32 games, I'd be surprised if anyone offers a 3rd, let alone a 2nd. I'd take a 3rd and run at this point.

I'd do this in a heartbeat. I think we'd be more likely to get a 3rd + mid- or low-tier prospect, but, hey, if anyone wants to give us a 2nd rounder, I'd take it.

The Flyers covet Suter according to several reports. The Red Wings have tons of cap room this offseason and will be looking to replace Lidstrom. The Rangers have a bunch of cap space, as well, and will most certainly get in on the bidding for Suter and Parise. All those teams are significantly better than us. Philly and New York are more desirable cities, and Detroit is a class organization with great tradition and great players. In other words, unless our owner and PSU alum has pictures of Suter casing a playground with Jerry Sandusky, he ain't signing in Buffalo.

I applaud your optimism, though.

First, we know Terry is willing to eat some money, but is he willing to eat $25-$40m for one player? Also, I doubt the Isles are looking to dump Tavares under any circumstances, even if saved Cheapo Wang a few bucks. Strome? Maybe, but I still wonder if Terry would eat that contract just for Strome.

I think you bring up a good strategy, which was already utilized in the Regehr trade, namely that we should be using our owners deep pockets to get more assets.

You can trade an injured player as long as the team acquiring the injured player is OK with the state of the injury.

In this case, there would be no surprise with regards to DiPi's health.

I doubt Tavares is available.

But, I'd ask!

Do you guys think Leopold is someone who could be moved at/before the deadline?

Also, what is your team looking for? A scoring forward? Depth?

Kesler for Leopold would work.

Talk to anyone who watches the Chicago Wolves play (Canucks AHL team). They'll tell you that Schroeder is actually having a good season. He really stepped up his defensive game from last season.

Anywho, yes, Schroeder and Raymond are available. Hansen is pretty much untouchable.

Leopold and change for Schoeder and Raymond?

Yeah, I know people hate the idea of getting/remaining smaller, but I'd be cool with adding some speed up front.

How about Leopold and Gaustad for Raymond, Schroeder, Sulzer, and a 5th round pick?
