Woooooow. So much coaching truculence. Whassat, like 4000+ NHL pims behind the bench now? If there's ever a coaches-included linebrawl, the Caps are stacked. Can we pick up Berube in the offseason just to gild the lily? Does Dave Williams coach? Truculently?

I remember Johnson real well. Poile brought him here to fill the defensive loss of trading Iafrate away along with getting Reekie. He was a pretty good stay at home defenseman. I remember his Minnesota days too. Interesting stuff.

Haha loved Chief when he was a Cap. He was one of those players you hate when playing on other teams though.

I want fewer things in common with the Philadelphia Eagles franchise, not more. Jim Johnson as a defensive coach...

Nice to see Jim Johnson being hired to help with the young Dmen.

Good riddance to Woods. Evason the cockroach next.

Wonder if dean evason is going to stay or have to leave

Maybe bob woods coaching style was way to similiar to boudreaus not to be effective with the new changes.

this "IMO" could apply to tons of former players.....

IMO, dale tapping JJ seems right in line with the kind mentality dale has, he wasnt a flashy highly talented guy, like green for example. he was a lunch pail, hard working player that made a career out of working hard to earn his spot, up to and including doing things outside his position - playing forward. he also obviously knows JJ's attitude from when he played for the caps.

I like the move.

Kinda disappointed in his career PIMs but he was a mobile simple straight game dman IIRC, maybe a bit like Alzner.

I bet Deano didn't sleep well last night knowing his resume's top item is "used the expression 'sack grab' on HBO".

When woods was hired I believe there were lamentations that it was not a D coach who had real NHL experience. No we have "rearranging the deck chairs." Never gonna please everyone.

Liked Woods, thought he might have a chance once he didn't go same day as Boudreau. Curious that there was a 24 hour delay. Week of change.

(as to the jokes about PF Changs hockey you all are finding in the searches...Johnson was ( I assume still was) very involved with youth hockey/development in Arizona.... in part due to some former players kids, but not exclusively, some kids from that organization have been drafted.

His son is a freshman as UMD (teammate of Caps draft pick/prospect Caleb Herbert)

Hey Caps Fans!

My name is Kim and I am a season ticket holder for the Norfolk Admirals and a huge Caps fan. I was here when JJ took over for the Admirals a couple years ago.

YOU. Will. LOVE. Him!

The Admirals were being run into a hole by the prior coach and the prior owners of Tampa Bay. Dont know how many knew what was going on in Tampa, but basically the cowboy owners and the GM before Vinik/Stevie Y tried to control the locker room and who played and didn't play, in Tampa and Norfolk. Well the fans in Norfolk were throwing a riot and the owner of the Admirals was basically saying "hey if you don't make some sort of change, our affliation is done and there will be reprecussions" . So the GM of TB (who was also NOR's GM) fired our coach (Coach Darren Rumble) and promoted JJ. JJ took this team and turned it around 100%. We went from not having a shot in h-e-double hockey sticks of making the playoffs to being 1 point from making the playoffs for the first time in 3 years. It literally came down to the last day and last game in the entire league to disqualify us from the playoffs. We would have made it with breathing room, but the TB GM Lawton threw a little pissy fit with the TB asst coach at the time and took JJ from us and brought him up to TB and put him in a room watching videos, and the coach that took over for us down here had no on ice coaching experience (he was the video coach).

Then we all expected him to be back the next year as TB didn't let him go until the middle of training camp that summer. TB just decided they wanted someone else and JJ understood that.

But he is good, he understands the game very well. When he was the ass't coach before becoming the head coach, he ran the defense and PK and our #s on that were killer. We were very low is GA% and were in the top 3 on the PK. He is very respectful of the players, but at the same time very authoritve and disciplanery.

I can't wait for him to get there and see what he does!

I doubt it. His must be the least secure job in hockey right now. On the other hand, as feeble as our O has been, we're 29th in Goals Against so Woods clearly had to go pronto. So the big question is who takes his spot?

Wasn't Deano the guy who gave the "grab your sack" speech? Maybe Dale watched the HBO special...
