Five Stars : Game 23 11/30/11 : TB 2 @ Det 4

Doing things a bit different this year. When the Wings win, we'll pick 5 stars and assign 5 points for the 1st star, 4 points for 2nd star, etc. When the Wings lose, we'll pick 3 stars with 3 points going to the 1st star, 2 points for the 2nd star, etc.. This (theoretically) helps solve the problem of the best player in an awful losing effort getting the same credit as the best player in a 15-0 blowout masterpiece.

Vote for your stars, argue, banter, lobby, vociferate, etc, and we'll keep the tally going all year. Post your choices in the thread and most #1s will be used to break ties - if you don't post your rankings, I won't be able to determine who you thought was 1st star and I'll decide myself (and I know you don't want that...). Write-ins count too, so feel free to write-in and then drum up your picks.

Mini-Standings through game 22:
Howard 42 pts
Filppula 35 pts
Franzen 27 pts
Datsyuk 26 pts
Lidstrom 16 pts

Jimmy undoubtedly number one. Best PKer on the ice for that last double minor. Team made enough boneheaded plays to make him necessary.

Howard. Anyone who doubts this is crazy.
Filppula. Solid as hell game again.
Datsyuk. Looking good still.
Bert. Looking GOOD with Dats lately. Good setups, playing faster, stronger. More aggressive. I like it.

Others? No one really stood out THAT much, but I thought Lids, Helm, Cleary, did very well.

Datsyuk was the best skater on the ice for 60 minutes.

Fil was great in the first, didn't notice him much in the other periods.

Cleary had a bit better game.

Hard to pick over Datsyuk and Howard...

Howard
Datsyuk
Filppula
Kronwall
Ericcson

Datsyuk
Howard
Filppula
Ericsson (oh my...E finally!!)
Kindl (made a great defensive play and nice pass for Helm's goal)

HM: Bert, Cleary and Lidstrom.

GTFO: Hudler for taking that stupid penalty late in the game and missing some pretty good chances.

No love for the Franzen cold-streak face?

This team has been a joy to watch lately. Great efforts from nearly everybody.

Howard is having an incredible season and I hope he can keep it up. A Vezina nomination would be awesome. When is the last time a Detroit goalie has received one?

Votes for Helm? Until that late goal he was horrid.

Flip is getting a ton of love for one pass that was deflected away from Zetterberg and right to Ericsson.

Otherwise, Flip had an OK game.

Wings who had a good game imo:
Datsyuk
Howard
Cleary
Kronwall
Ericsson
Stuart

1st star Datsyuk
2nd Howard
3rd Filppula

I thought Kindl had a particularly effective game. I think he has been pretty good the whole season, but really liked what he brought tonight. The Helm goal was a great example of a D-man not just blindly dumping it in, taking what was given and making a smart play. Also think he looks as strong as he ever has, his physical game has really ramped up. If they wind up not dealing Kindl or Smith at this point those are two big guys that can play with bite (Smith with more of that) and really skate the puck out of trouble and make good passes. Really happy with his progress thus far and tonight was another example of it.

Also been down on Stuart a lot of this year. Was very happy with his game tonight. Played big and blocked a bunch of shots. Other than the lets play him on a four minute power play when he hasn't been seeing any PP time shift, I had little to complain about and that I will blame on Babcock.

Question, why single out Stuart and not Kindl?

Not necessarily having a go, just asking?

'96

that was a strange season for goalies, and i don't think osgood should have been a finalist.

vernon was 4th in '95, even though he was mediocre. 3 GM's actually thought he was the best goalie, even though hasek was hugely better in every way.

Vernon being a finalist was funny; Osgood was superior in every single statistic except games played, wins, ties, and PIM. Osgood was second in the league in save percentage to Hasek, and only Jocelyn Thibault had a better winning percentage. Yet Osgood wasn't even MENTIONED for the Vezina. Osgood should have been a Vezina finalist in 95, 96, and 08; and IMO deserved to win in 96.

imo, osgood as a vezina finalist in any season would have been dumb. osgood was a backup goalie in '95 (vernon 30 games, osgood 19). backups are never vezina finalists.

in '95, osgood only played 6 games vs teams above .500. 3 of those 6 were vs calgary, who benefited from being the only team in their division above .500.

vernon probably well in '95 vezina voting b/c of team (DRW were 1st overall) and reputation.

it is strange that vernon developed a reputation as a playoff goalie. he was in net for many calgary teams which underperformed in the playoffs, and other than a couple of playoffs for great teams ('89, '97), his playoff numbers are generally not good.

He didn't play well for two periods, that's for sure. He was much better in the third. His PK'ing was shaky I thought.

When the Wings were getting pinned in their own zone from Tampa's forecheck, only two forwards tried/managed to get the puck out of the zone and into the offensive zone to setup something. He created Ericsson's goal on his own. With his speed he beat (Kubina?) circled the net and identified the players in the slot. He got lucky with the deflection, but his hard work paid off. Give him credit.

He's consistently the best forward not named Datsyuk and he deserves a shout out.

Agreed. Except for that ridiculous collision Kronner and Stuart had during the 4 min PP They were pretty solid. Good hit by Stuart on Malone too.

I would definitely add Bert and Kindl to that list though.

I am not so sure about Bert, he looked very lost on that 2nd goal, leaving "his" man wide open.
Bertuzzi has to iron his game out. No unnecessary penalties and no blind (behind the back) passes.

IMO the only thing Bertuzzi needs to do is keep his mouth shut around the officials. He was interfered with, and gets a penalty....he gets called on less than nothing. The problem is he runs his mouth every time. I'm sure I agree with every foul word, but it's pretty dumb. Once he starts to respect the officials, they might just take note and let him play. Babcock needs to step in with a "let me do the talking".
