PL3 on Waivers

Traded a 5th Rounder for him...........,Michael Ferland was a 5th rounder, not saying he's a garanteed prospect, but the chance is there.

Not good management at all. We trade a 5th round pick for someone to play the preseason? Did he end up playing a regular season game for us?

I think he played a few games but what a waste of a draft pick.

But why the hell did we acquire him in the first place? To serve a role that Kostopolous or Jackman already serve? We had a surplus of forwards coming into this season right from the start, along with the promise of more prospects getting a shot.

First we give away a seventh rounder for Modin, who played a total of 5 minutes. Then we give away a second rounder so Buffalo can bury Kotalik in the minors, and now a fifth rounder so PL3 can sit in the press box.

It seems like Feaster doesn't like the draft.

This is what I suspect.

Feaster should have to go in the Penality box over this one and for the Modin trade for 2 mintues and feel shame, then he can be free.

A 5th rounder for a 4th liner. Sure it didn't work out but this is such minuscule stuff that I'm honestly a bit surprised by the strong reactions here. Also, welcome back Byron.

Its not minuscule when the weakest part of your organization is your prospects. Feaster would admit to those trades being both mistakes on his part.

According to Feaster Iggy really pushed to get a tough guy on the roster and Sutter insisted on him for some reason.. It definately sucks, especially considering all the tough guys that could have been had for free this year.

Of course in hindsight this trade shouldn't have been made but a 5th rounder is a 5th rounder. The chances of that 5th round pick ever making the NHL are not that high statistically. Losing the pick does make our prospect pool smaller but I would say the effect is indeed minuscule. PL3 was somewhat recommended by coach Brent IIRC so it was worth a shot; it didn't pay off but worth a shot.

Yes it is a small chance, but why even take a chance on losing a potential NHL roster player when so many guys like PL3 could of been attained with giving up nothing. We could of likely claimed PL3 on waivers.

Waste of a pick. It would be awesome if he got claimed, but I highly doubt it.

Devils fans were shocked that Leblond returned a draft let pick, let alone a 5th rounder. Taking this trade and the Modin one into account, you can't help but realize that Feaster is a terrible negotiator or a poor evaluator of value/talent; most likely both.

Still, it's better then trading first round picks for Shane O'Brien's and Fedetenko's. I guess this is an example of Feaster 'learning' from his mistakes. It's progress at least.

What's better - trading a 5th rounder for someone who's played what, 2 games with the Flames before being jettisoned to Abbotsford, or signing someone as a UFA for the same thing while keeping that 5th round pick.

Questionable (downright poor) asset management is why the Flames are in the position they are now.

This isn't justification for Feaster's actions, this is evidence that he's incapable of managing. Every single year a tough guy gets waived. Every year! Feaster could have serviced his team's needs with a little patience, while making good decisions.

Is Iggy running this team? Or Sutter for that matter? Feaster should take control of this organization, or otherwise relinquish it, because you can only have one General Manager.

The major problem I have with an even small trade mistake like this is that over time all of these small mistakes add up and separate the men from the boys in terms of perennial contenders and the 7-11 teams (teams like the Flames that are always battling for the 7 on downward position in the conference).

It makes the recovery time in revamping a franchise all the longer...

Very frustrating to see when even the casual fan is perplexed by such an unintelligent transaction.

I will say this, Darryl Sutter's strength was finding tough guys on the cheap without trading draft picks. Oh wait, he just traded picks for other POS.

So what you're demanding then is absolute perfection from the man? Seriously guys, it's a 5th round pick, how about we ease up a little?

I just want the Flames to stop trading draft picks period. Unless it was for a bonifide, young NHL'er, then we need all the picks we have.

To put it another way, the team has drafted 181 players in the 5th round or later. Of those, only 53 ever played a single game in the NHL. And of those, only 21 played 250+ games in the NHL.

So, statistically speaking, that 5th round pick would've given us about a 9% chance to draft an NHL regular. Or if you wanna be pessimistic about it, there's a 91% chance the player wasn't going to be an NHL regular.

(248 games is considered the average length of a player's NHL career according to this site: http://www.quanthockey.com/Distribut...erLengthGP.php).
