Part of the problem was that there were just too many guys higher on the Badgers depth chart. I saw Patrick play in a maybe two or three games this season and he didn't do anything that absolutely wowed me. It's sad that he's chosen to leave hockey behind, but at least he has the good sense to continue with his education and pursue a career that he could be happy with.
Best of luck, Patrick.
This
If he doesnt think he can become a pro, then he made the right choice
He was definitely a project pick when the Devils drafted him, so it's tough to say what he could've developed into. Sounds like he has a good head on his shoulders though, best of luck in the future to him.

2011-12: The start of a new making the playoffs streak!
Wedge won last night and I think he matched his win totals from last season in less games. That means for now the Whalers have clmbed up to number 1 in the conference with a few games left. I think that the Whalers might do some damage in the playoffs this year.

They certainly have the team and if you add Wedge playing well in the playoffs, they should have a shot. It would be nice to see Wedge get some experience in a long playoff run.

I'm pretty sure once you sign a pro contract your college eligibility is gone. Hell, they can't even come to our camps unless they pay their own way, NCAA is VERY strict when it comes to pro status.
I'm pretty sure they're so strict about it, that they consider the CHL a professional league. Therefore, you can leave college to go to the CHL, but you can't leave the CHL and be eligible for NCAA hockey.
If you could sign a contract and still retain NCAA eligibility, Merrill would be signed by now, and the Ducks wouldn't have run into their problems with Schultz.
Now that I think about it, the NCAA lost a lot of players to the CHL over the last year or so. Maybe around 30 or 40 NHL draftees. I would be surprised if the NCAA didn't revise their rules within the next few years.
Yeah, all the above mentioned have done well so far. Still long ways to go though before we can call them a success. As their success should mostly be judged by how well they do with the big club if they ever get there. Early signs are good though.
It's a good sign when all of them are meeting or exceeding expectations after the first season since the draft. Usually at least one of the mid-round picks falls off a cliff and we know pretty quickly that he's going to be a bust.

It's too bad about Daly. I stuck around to watch him get drafted last year and it was pretty amusing. Conte activates the microphone at the table to announce the pick but forgets who they're picking. He hastily covers the mic with his hand and asks "What's the kid's name again?" except that it was audible for everybody.
I can't remember for sure, but since the draft was in Minnesota, teams were going out of their way to mention which high school the Minnesota draftees had attended. I think Conte remembered the name of Daly's high school (Benilde-St. Margaret's) but forgot Daly.
