Crosby hat trick.

Malkin 2 goals 2 assists.

Ovie -5.

Alzner +1.

(Or it could be the other way). You never know with the Pens.

Vokoun gets the start. Not a huge surprise, but I figured this game was as good a chance as any to get Neuvirth going again. Not sure if that kind of thing carries over season to season though.

All in due time I'm sure. I was convinced Knuble, a serious Pen killer, would be back up on the second line. I'm sure there is a plan though. I bide my time.
i agree. figured hunter would shake it up after that first game, especially since eakin was pretty overmatched last game. patience, I suppose.

Hope Asham is ready to meet his maker tonight. I hope Erskine is ready to go, if not I don't think Hendy will have much of a problem going with him. Hopefully we go after Despres a lot tonight.

Hopefully we improve off of the Blues game and work into Hunter's system a little more. I think in about 5-7 games we'll be in full flight, but I think we've got to understand we're not going to be at our best for a little while. It takes time we've got to be patient.

All I care about is an improved effort from last game. You people that thought they put in a good effort against St. Louis are crazy.

Full on crazy? It wouldn't be the first time. Just how do you measure effort - speed gun, sweat? You do know players have to pace themselves, they cannot go full bore. They also have zone responsibilities of which we are not sure of.

I cant believe a single player wouldn't give what he thought was a respectable effort for a new coach. Risk getting reamed out... i didn't see anyone slacking but missed the 3rd via comcast blackout.

Which players refused to give a respectable effort for the 1st game.

30 shot attempts. 2 penalties drawn. 1 shot below the dots. Massive disparity in offensive zone time.

They weren't moving their feet, weren't getting into the dirty areas, weren't winning puck battles or races. If that's not evidence of a lack of effort, we're in much more serious trouble than anyone has thought.

Coach said so....

If you knew anything, you'd be in the game...

Oh the irony.

I expect Hunter will ride Vokoun and typically use the goalies in a more traditional starter/backup manner unless Vokoun's play dictates otherwise.

I agree with everything you said about how they played, I just don't attribute it to lack of effort. They were tentative and hesitant to make mistakes or overcommit. They played not to fug up -- generally not a winning formula.

What was disappointing was that no one on the team played a balls-out/hit everything/forecheck like demons kind of game -- they seemed too unsure of themselves. No one led or inspired the team to play with energy and urgency and hunger. That has to change.

I think they tried as hard they could (effort), but their mental make-up is so bad right now that they play like they're in a fog on the ice.

Oops, it’s actually the third game in a row the Caps are playing against a rookie dman playing in his first NHL game:

Buffalo: Brayden McNabb (it was Brennan’s third game)
St. Louis: Fairchild
Pittsburgh: Despres (expected)

+1. Why Knuble is getting 4th line minutes is a mystery.

I like the idea of this new defensive system. At least in theory. It puts the onus directly on players to perform and makes it impossible for them to slough of responsibility or make excuses if they fail. Just so long as it weeds out the losers and actually helps the transition game.

Thats what I was yelling watching the game on the tube. I like that loud guy already!

Miserable effort vs Blues. They better assert themselves tonight since its their hated rival. It would be VERY troubling if they couldn't get up emotionally for this one.

The Caps problems are not physical. They have the talent, even on D, to be a top team. Their problems are all mental and I cannot understand why they are so fragile.

I hope so, stability is one of the most important thing for the goalies, imo...

Better effort would be what I'd call the Blues game for the most part. Room for improvement is definitely there but compared to the sabres game I'll take it.
