Newest leaked proposal has the old Patrick Division back together.
I like it, although personally, I was selfishly hoping for the Panthers and Islanders to be in the same division so I could see them down here a few times a year.
So neither Detroit, Columbus or Nashville get what they want & Florida & TB get royally screwed.
Fine by me.
Actually, DET and CBJ are getting almost everything they want -- less games in the MST and PST zones. They'd probably like more games in the EST, but it's a compromise that's also trying to help out the Jets, Stars, Pens, and Flyers.
As for Tampa and Florida, I'm thinking their management might be ok with as well. Tampa has a pretty solid fan base up there so I think they'd be ok anywhere and Florida has a ton of snowbirds down here in Miami. Original Six games are usually sold out down here -- but packed with the opposing fans.
Ummm.....I'd have to say the Isles are getting completely screwed (playing-wise, not traveling) in this situation. It is the whole Atlantic division plus Washington (yikes). The only team that would probably be worse at this point would be Carolina.

I was thinking why Carolina? Just put Boston in our division and end all hope already.

Like I've said before, with the possible exceptions of DET (and us ), teams are generally cyclical, going through both periods of ups and downs. If this debate was happening 6 years ago, teams might have been clamoring for PIT and WAS (both finished last in their divisions) to be in their division. Now they don't want anything to do with either.
Detroit is not allowed to leave because the WC teams want the ticket revenue. MEANWHILE, the eastern time zone team's fans have to endure the late games. If they move Detroit east, there are 15 teams per conference.
The good news about this is that the teams in each division from the East have the same numbers of teams in them (7) and so do the divisions in the West (8 each). However, man do we get put in the toughest division. Our talent will really need to pan out if we want to have a shot in that division.
A New Look
Here is the four-conference format approved by the NHL board of governors Monday night. Under the realigned format, which still needs to be officially implemented by commissioner Gary Bettman, every team would play every other club in a home-and-home matchup:
Conference "A"
Anaheim
Calgary
Colorado
Edmonton
Los Angeles
Phoenix
San Jose
Vancouver
Conference "B"
Chicago
Columbus
Dallas
Detroit
Minnesota
Nashville
St. Louis
Winnipeg
Conference "C"
Boston
Buffalo
Florida
Montreal
Ottawa
Tampa Bay
Toronto
Conference "D"
Carolina
New Jersey
New York Islanders
New York Rangers
Philadelphia
Pittsburgh
Washington* Forgot on initial post*
Sucks for us fans in Florida as we will only see the Isles once a season. Unless we travel from Tampa to South Florida or from South Florida to Tampa.

I love this. The first two rounds of the playoffs are going to be awsome. This is really going to open to door to alot of nasty rivalries. I know the schedules will be balanced next year and all, but just for fun here's what the standings would be this year with the realignment:
Pitt 36
NYR 33
PHI 33
WAS 27
NJ 25
NYI 21
CAR 20
I expect Washington to turn it on eventually and rack up some points, but as of right now we'd be 2 points closer to a playoff spot in division then we are in confrence(OTT 8th 29pts).
My knee jerk reaction is for the league to stop *****footing around, and just stamp these divisions with names and assign them conferences with names, too. But I guess with the whole Phoenix situation looming, they can't be so commital, and like the Jets this year, if Phoenix has to move to Quebec next year, that team will have to bit the bullet for a season, too, with unconscionable travel. I do like the new/old format though. Hopefully we can drop East/West and get into some traditional hockey names, like Patrick, Adams, Smyth, and Norris. However, if they do that, the division nams are likely to be modernized, like Gretzky (Old Smythe division), Howe (Old Norris Division), Orr (Old Adams Division), I don't want to say who would get the Patrick Division name, because I hate the guy, but you know who I'm talking about. Either way, this is 100% speculation on my part.
These are all teams we compete hard against in the current format anyway.. we won't be able to compete any better or worse in the playoff race in this proposed Conference than we do in our present Eastern Conference..
Additionally, I believe this re-alignment would weaken all of the above listed teams within 2 years.. Say what you want - but some future UFAs who might have otherwise been eyeing one of the above-listed teams might avoid coming in to this conference if they have more viable options and an easier road to the playoffs..
Regardless, if we can't beat out three of the above listed teams then we won't be able to win the Cup anyway.. so the very bottom line is that the proposed re-alignment is a wash for the NYI when compared to our championship hopes within the present alignment..
