Ansar Khan: Red Wings' Ty Conklin hopes to equal previous success against Colorado

Quote:
DENVER -- It may be tempting for Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock to continue riding goaltender Jimmy Howard, who is on a tremendous roll.

Babcock also understands the need to get backup Ty Conklin some games while giving Howard a breather after 17 consecutive starts. So, Conklin will start tonight at Colorado, as the Red Wings try to stretch their winning streak to eight in a row.

Conklin turned in a stellar 29-save performance Oct. 8 in a 3-0 victory against the Avalanche at the Pepsi Center.

"Howieís played great, we can always do that (play him), but I think Conks is going to play great (tonight)," Babcock said. "He played great the last time in here."

Conklinís last start was Oct. 25 in Columbus -- a 4-1 loss -- when Howard was home following the birth of his son. Conklinís last appearance was Nov. 17 in San Jose, when he played the third period during a 5-2 loss.

Conklin is 1-2-0, with a 3.33 goals-against average and .880 save percentage.

"Iím very excited," Conklin said. "Itíll be nice to get in there and get some action."

Conklin said he did what all goalies do when theyíve been inactive for a long stretch -- treat practices like games.

"Thatís as much as you can do," Conklin said. "Physically, youíre always skating. I think itís just the mental stuff, getting prepared and staying focused for 60 minutes and getting into the flow of the game because things are going to be faster than they are in practice."

As for his shutout against the Avalanche earlier this season, Conklin said, "You can draw on good experiences, but teams are playing different, itís a different time of the season."

Colorado is 3-1 in its past four games but remains under .500 at 12-13-1.

Howard hasnít been the least bit worn down by his heavy workload. He leads the NHL in wins (15-5-1), is near the top in goals-against average (1.83) and has an excellent save percentage (.931).

"When youíre playing a lot, itís good to get a little mental break here and there, but I enjoy being out there every single night," Howard said. "Me being the competitor, I like to be out there for the guys, but at the same time Ty needs to play. Itís important to our team he gets on the ice and does a great job."

Howard started 25 games in a row for the Red Wings from Jan. 29 to April 3, 2010, during a playoff push. He went 16-4-5.

"Itís a long season, so Iím sure thereís going to be some bumps along the way," Howard said. "Iím just trying to minimize them as much as possible."

Don't think I can watch this one. It starts pretty late, will probably end around 5 am here and I have to work in the morning.

Just watch out for Duchene. They guy is one sneaky *******. They have speed up front, so our blueline is going to have their work cut out.

Hopefully they can dominate early like against Nashville or Buffalo.

I don't think Johnson is back. He's on IR I believe. Man, he's underachieving for a former first overall pick.

Projected lineup for Colorado Avalanche.

Joakim Lindstrom is not even with the avs anymore so I think you can remove him.
Swedish newspaper says he returned to SEL to play for Skelleftea.

I like how the Detroit GDT has more posts from Avalanche fans than Detroit fans.

Keep Johan Franzen out of our zone? okay? That way it's an even game? Sounds good? Agree? Alright sounds good.

Erik Johnson is back in lineup tonight after missing 4 games due to a groin injury. The Avs are going with 7 defensemen tonight and 11 forwards. They wanted to keep rookie defenseman Stefan Elliott in the lineup.

Chuck Kobesaw is out with an injury and Cody McCleod will take his place in the lineup. Either Kevin Porter or Brandon Yip will be in the lineup over Lindstrom, who has returned to Sweden.

I think the Wings get complacent and sloppy and Colorado's speed and forecheck make us pay.

It's so obvious that DRW absolutley have to win this one and three more in a row. Then the DRW have both stopped the Bruins streak and beaten it as well. That would be epic!!

I hope they realize that Conks hasn't started in a while, and try their damn hardest to get him a win. They need to help him regain Babs trust, for his sake, and for Howie's sake... I don't think anyone on the team wants to see Howard play 70+ this year.

I hope they can continue this hot streak. Last game, Filppula was all over the puck. You saw him when he was on the ice. He didn't just fade into the background. I'm loving whatever confidence this guy has going for him. Let's see it continue tonight against a team that has been struggling all season at home.

Duchene-Stastny-Jones
Landeskog-O'Reilly-Hejduk

Johnson is back and Kobasew is out so I'm not sure what's happening with the bottom 6 and the D
