Bottom pair? Highly doubt that ...

No way Stuart is bottom pair. He is the #4 defenseman who could step up and play in the top pairing when needed.

Even I wouldn't go that far. I will admit Stuart is a #4 d-man. I just hope he doesn't slip to a #5 and #6 d-man before his contract ends. Now, Douglas Murray is a bottom pairing d-man. Need to get rid of him. Shouldn't pay 2.5 mill for him to play on the bottom pairing. I'd rather try Demers/Braun on the bottom pairing. They're cheaper, more mobile, and better offensively than Murray.

He is the #4 defenseman like Murray is the #4 defenseman. He should be carrying the third pairing at even strength and logging heavy PK minutes. If he's on the other side of Boyle or Burns this year at even strength, we're likely running into defensive problems.

I expect him to be paired with Boyle more.

Burns - Vlasic
Stuart - Boyle
Demers/Pelech - Braun

I would think this (below) would work ok too but putting Braun with Boyle means Brauns growth as an offensive D-man will get stunted. Thanks to the O-hole (ha!) that Boyle is.

Burns - Vlasic
Boyle - Braun
Stuart - Demers

I expect him to be paired with Boyle also but I don't expect it to work either. Stuart at even strength wasn't that good and wasn't on the left side, he was on the right.

If our D is set at

Boyle Burns
Vlasic Demers
Stuart Braun
Murray

You're gonna have a bad time.

That is a solid defense, not best in the league, but top 5 I would think, especially if Murray is replaced with a left side puck mover (Gunnarson has been mentioned, but something like that).

Add in Suter and you have either:

Suter - Burns
Stuart - Boyle
Vlasic - Demers/Braun

(best defense in the league, bar none).

or

Suter - Burns
Vlasic - Demers
Stuart - Braun

Top-3 d.

I'm not super worried about the defense.

I would kill for a more aggressive Sharks team. They've been so boring all last season.

I think that means that one assistant coach goes back to being the video coach.

Hard to be really aggressive when your team speed is as slow as the Sharks' is right now.

Not really, it's better than last year's when we were 8th in GAA (and that was with that atrocious PK and Colin White in the lineup on a regular basis).

sharks goals against stats for last season.

9th in 5-5 for/against
8th in goals against/game
5th in 5-5 goals against
20th in 3-4 goals against (2 goals allowed)
26th in 3-5 goals against (6 goals allowed)
19th in 4-5 goals against (44 goals allowed)
8th in total goals against.
10th in goal differencial. (+18).

i see one true weakness with the defense on this team. and it wasn't due to a bad defense core

The 5th in 5-5 goals against the the number I'm looking at. Just fix the damn PK and that's a stingy defense.

DW tried to fix it by trading everything he could for PK specialist rentals, and TMac just wasted them with the crappy system... the new guys just berstared once they got here and realized they were being coached to sit back and wait for the PP to score on them

next year if the sharks are at the all-star break and are in the bottom half of the league in PK and not leading the division, I think TMac's gone... TMac has more than enough talent to have an above-average PK

SJSHARKS.com: What was more difficult, the combine and the interview process or being in the arena and waiting for your name to be called? (Question from @LadyStanley)

LC: Those were both pretty tough. The combine was probably the hardest thing. I think I had twenty-six interviews with different teams over a two day period. So that was long and on the third day I had to do the fitness testing in the morning and that was very, very difficult. It was tough on the body and just a tough weekend overall. And sitting before the draft was pretty tough. You don’t know where you’re going to go, and I was pretty nervous. But it was all worth it.

I agree with you on this one. Between Marleau/Pavelski/Winnik/Moore/Desjardins/Handzus/Couture/even Thornton and Vlasic/Murray/White/Burns/Boyle, TMac had plenty of talent to run a good PK. Adding Stuart is more.

Maybe DW's plan is to build like the Kings cup winning team. To do this he has to fire the coach mid season.
