Barry Fraser. Scouting Genius?

In 1979 Edmonton Oiler head scout Barry Fraser convinced the oilers to draft Kevin Lowe, Mark Messier and Glenn Anderson. In 1980 Paul Coffey, Jari Kurri and Andy Moog were selected. In 1981 Grant Fuhr and Steve Smith were taken. Fraser was hailed as a scouting genius but in subsequent years the Oilers used first round draft picks to select Jim Playfair, Jeff Bekeboom (not bad), Selmar Odelein, Scott Metcalfe, Kim Issel, Peter Sobelak, Francois Leroux, Jason Soules, Scott Allison, Tyler Wright and Joe Hulbig. It's probably the worst run of first round picks any team has ever had. People stopped calling Fraser a genius.

Is scouting just one of those things that tends to average out over time or are there really truly elite scouts and who are they?

Hakan Andersson.

He's the Wings' chief Euro scout. He's also responsible for the phrase "Jonathan Ericsson, NHL defenseman" because Ericsson was a center and on one of Andersson's scouting trips Ericsson filled in on D for injured players.

Responsible for Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Kronwall, Fischer, Holmstrom, and others.

Christer Rockstrom.

He was the Wings' chief Euro scout before Andersson (and got Andersson the job). He's responsible for the drafting to Detroit of players like Lidstrom, Fedorov, Kozlov, Konstantinov, the attempted drafting of Pavel Bure, and others.

Jarmo Kekalainen scouted Europe for Ottawa when they drafted guys like Alfredsson, Demitra, Arvedsson and Hossa. I think it was possible to find underscouted gems in Europe at one time. I'm not sure if that's still the case.

It was about ten or twelve years ago, not sure now. Andersson is pretty certain that he's the only scout who saw Datsyuk pre-draft.

Barry Fraser got lazy in those horrific formative drafting years you mentioned. He actually lived in Mexico for a while and "scouted" players by watching tapes that were sent to him.

That explains quite a bit. You'd think if he just followed the Central Scouting list he'd have done a whole lot better.
