Bob McKenzie: NHL realignment could be decided today

There is a reasonable chance, if all goes well, that NHL realignment will be concluded by day's end.

my one hockey fan regret in life was not having the ability to see more of Lidstrom while he was in his prime. I for one would LOVE it if the Red Wings were in our division. i believe that is one of the main realignment scenario's that are on the table, correct?

That's the one I keep hearing about. Detroit coming East. Would love to see more of the Red Wings. While that scenario would break up a couple of longtimerivalries (Avalanche and Blackhawks) it would reignite some even older ones (Maple Leafs if I am not mistaken).

Anyway, I'm excited for a little bit of a shakeup.

It could be good that Detroit will be in our division because they'll be old and **** soon. Hopefully.

I kept hearing all weekend that Bettman wanted 4 divisions, 2 in east and 2 in west with TB an Florida in with us (Boston, Toronto, MTL, Buffalo and Ottawa)

That's the most recent proposal I've seen.

The one good thing about this set up is every team plays each other home and away. I like that. I will be able to see the B's in Minnesota or Winnipeg each year.

I think this could work too

NW
Vancouver
Winnipeg
Calgary
Edmonton
Colorado

Pacific
Exactly the same

Central
Minnesota
Detroit
Chicago
Saint Louis
Columbus

SE
Nashville
Washington
Florida
Tampa
Carolina

Atlantic

Same

NE

Same

Geographically it makes sense to replace Atlanta with Nashville and then Minnesota with for Nashville, Winnipeg is a northern Canadian team and it makes sense to put them in the northwest division which is closer geographically and will promote Canadian rivalries.

The only thing i dont like about it, is only one team per division ( i think they will call them conferences, no more east west conferences ) will come out of it.

So if the Bruins division is the strongest only one team will go to Stanley cup semi finals.

We should be in a division with Calgary and Edmonton.

How does this make sense in a geographical way, though? Does it? Montreal and Florida in the same division?

Not that I care, particularly. Just wondering why this is getting the most support.

We could probably get Lindy Ruff to lobby the NHL for it to happen.

I would love to, but it's easier said than done.

EDIT: And I don't particularly like the 4 conferences/divisions because of this:

And because Florida and Tampa in our conference/division doesn't really make sense to me.

I wish we were in a division with Carolina. Quite a bit of bad blood there for two teams that aren't already in the same division and they do have that New England lineage.

I don't want Eric Staal in the same division. It's bad enough having Vanek and Grabovski score on Boston every game. Staal's an even bigger Bruin killer.

Good bye rivalries...hello what happened in the mid-90s. Countless meaningless games and no hatred between teams.

Careful what you wish for.

I don't know about that, they make me a little nervous. Yeah, Lidstrom, theoretically should be retiring soon (like in the next 10 years) but they are just a great organization, they are great at finding players that will work for their system, and they do a great job developing them, so I think they are going to be good for a long time. They will consistently be at the top of whatever division/conference they are in. It will be a challenge for the Bs if they are in the same division, but it should be a lot of fun to watch.

I think they're looking to sell out more FL games to MTL fans.

Putting the Florida teams in the "Adams Division" would be done to appease Pittsburgh who *****ed about being split from Philadelphia. I'd be for the four division set up because it essentially restores the old divisions (about as close as we're going to get anyway). I like that Washington goes back to the Patrick Division. It bugs me that they're in the south east. Also, I like keeping Detroit and Chicago in the same division. Divisional playoffs in the first round would really add to new and old rivalries. Making the Leafs go through Boston in the playoffs could really boost that rivalry to new levels.
