As a preliminary matter, I do not believe such a deal would work simply based on the cap implications. Colorado is hugging the cap floor and at any given time this season is only $1-2 million over the cap. Plus, I believe that Buffalo is close to the cap max, so Buffalo will definitely have to move salary prior to this proposed deal.
As far as the value, I think Buffalo would have to add a different forward, perhaps a Stafford or Adam. One of the Avs' best prospects, Joey Hishon, I believe will be very similar to Ennis, assuming that he can get healthy. The Avs seem to have a need for more forward size, particularly in its top-6. So Stafford, Adam, and Buffalo prospect Kassian may have more value. The Avs' brass may be wary of Stafford and the length of his deal and whether he can duplicate his goal production from last season, or whether that was an aberration.
