No surprise. Buff, Enstrom, Hainsey, Bogosian... didn't know that Oduya made 3.5M, though.

And Roszival makes 5M? Damn.

Nice!

I thought Ottawa might have an outside shot:

Gonchar 5.5M
Kuba 3.7M
Phillips 3M
Lee ~1M (can't remember exact cap hit)
Carkner ~750K (can't remember exact cap hit)

But I guess all of our others guys being on ELCs helps... top heavy, but tails off.

The big shocker is Phoenix. Top 10 in anything money related is surprising.

One more reason Shero is amazing. I had expected the Pens to be flirting with the top ten list, but they get a lot of bang for the buck.

A few teams like the Ducks, the Bruins, the Panthers and the Penguins are around $18-19 millions, so there is not a lot of difference in the middle of the pack.

And yet, 5 of those teams have some of the better defense in the league.

Flyers
Kings
Canucks
Hawks
Sharks

I guess switching Gogo for Niskanen kept the Pens off this list. Our 3-4 pairing makes 9 million dollars. Of course the 1-2 makes 7.25 so maybe that's an anomaly.

Phoenix at 5 were the biggest surprise for me (they have a nice group of dmen, but I'm just surprised to see them spending big money in any category, really). I'd say the Flames get the worst value for their money out of anyone on this list.

The Leafs have an expensive group, but if I could make contracts disappear, the only guy I'd get rid of would be Komisarek, I'm totally fine with what we pay everyone else. We allow a lot of goals, for sure, but that's more about the style we play than the dmen themselves, we play a very high risk, fast paced style, with tonnes of aggressive forechecking, literally zero trapping, and plenty of high risk plays when crossing the blueline, it's a style that creates a tonne of offense for us (a big part of why Kessel and Lupul are both top 3 in the NHL in scoring, not to mention Phaneuf and Liles both being top 15 in dman scoring), but a style that also gives up a tonne of odd man rushes and high percentage scoring opportunities against. Phaneuf, Gunnarsson, Liles, Schenn and Gardiner are all good dmen and big contributors to the team so far, I'm quite happy with our group of defenders despite the fact that we give up a lot of goals against as a team.

Luke Scheen.

I'm pretty surprised by Winnipeg and Phoenix being that high up. That said, as another poster pointed out, many of the middle-pack teams aren't far off. I'd probably be more interested to know the teams with the least expensive defensive units.

Letang, Engelland, and Orpik all are on very sweet deals. And Niskanen with his elevated play this year is not far off. $9.25 million for those four. That for all but Niskanen are signed very long term at those prices is even more impressive. Gogo for Niskanen is nice, but is the lesser part of the story.

Hainsey and Oduya might not be around long term IMO. Oduya's an upcoming UFA. When Bogosian's due for a raise they'll probably need to make room otherwise they'll top the list.

^^^ We don't have to worry about Bogo getting a raise until after next season. Oduya is as good as gone after this year and even if Hainsey stays long term, I doubt he gets a contract like that again from us. Maybe in an open market though. With Buff, Enstrom, and Bogosian, we'll have money tied up in the D for awhile.

I expected to see them in the top 10 but 3rd even surprised me a little bit. The money is right but with the wrong players. Enstrom should be making what Buff is, Buff should be making what Hainsey makes, Bogosian should be making what Enstrom makes, Hainsey should be making what Oduya makes, and Oduya is just overpaid for what he brings. Been good this year, but with Enstrom, Buff, and Bogosian there is no need for any kind of offense from him.

Like "ponder" said, Phoenix is definitely a surprise. I also find Chicago not being higher a surprise. Guess I forgot that Chicago has a reasonable just under $15 mill tied up in their top 3 guys.

Pretty much case in point right now on why Yeo should be the frontrunner for the Jack Adams. Wild at 12 million and a huge portion of that money hasn't even been playing in Zidlicky. While the Wild likely will fall off its pretty obvious right now that Yeo is getting this team to play way above the sum of its parts.
