Definitely! More chances for road trips back and forth methinks.

I like it; hope they use the traditional names like Norris, etc. Should phoenix move, then they'd go from an 8 conference to a 7, so that makes it simple. (Even if that's not discussed in the press release, I bet it was considered)

I believe they're just being prepared in case Phoenix folds and move to Quebec City, then there's 15 teams both west and east.

And that fold could happen as early as when?

Despite the obvious disadvantage of playing Detroit and Chicago 5 or 6 times a year, I'm pretty excited to see those teams come in on a regular basis, although I'm sure I'll hate them after a couple of years, haha.

It will be great to have rivalries with cities like Minnesota, St. Louis and Chicago. Jets were in a division like that at one point in the early NHL years.

As a fan initially I wasn't keen on this setup (find the teams in our conference kinda boring to be honest).

However when you factor in staying in our own time zone for a good portion of our games, the fact we play everyone at least twice, and the old school playoff format (which IMHO stimulates wicked rivalries), I like it.

As for the hard to make the playoffs? It's difficult to do that every year.

Nope, the conference winners after the first two playoff rounds get re-seeded. That means there is no East and West anymore in terms of who gets to meet for the Stanley Cup.

Edit: Although it will be harder for the teams in the conferences with eight teams to make the playoffs, if that's what you meant.

Yup... you could see the Cinderella team get seeded against the highest seed in the final four.

The potential for a East-East or West-West final is interesting! Any two teams could potentially meet in the finals.

Not quite. Teams in the same "conference" cannot meet in the final.

Fantastic News .....Winnipeg is a midwestern city, not a western one and belongs in a central conference. Besides this geographical reason would much rather watch the Jets play the Wings, Wild, Hawks etc rather than the Flames, Ducks, and Canucks.

So I'm guessing scheduling goes:

7 team conferences (EastI & EastII):

6 conference opponents * 6 games (3 home and 3 away) = 36
23 non-conference opponents * 2 games (home and away) = 46

8 team conference (Central & Pacific):

3 conference opponents * 6 games (3 home and 3 away) = 18
2 conference opponents * 5 games (3 home and 2 away) = 10
2 conference opponents * 5 games (2 home and 3 away) = 10
22 non-conference opponents * 2 games (home and away) = 44

Not a big fan of this. Wish we were in the West. And it seems crazy that there is no sort of crossover as some teams that finish fifth in their conference might have more points than some playoff teams and not make the playoffs. I actually like the current format so this will take some getting used to for me.

Seems like expansion may be in the cards in the coming years...

As things stand now:

Minnesota - 37
Chicago - 35
Detroit - 33
Dallas - 31
St. Louis - 31
Nashville - 28
Winnipeg - 26
Columbus - 17

Winnipeg will certainly have a tough time in this conference, will be a big difference going up against these Western Conference teams.

there was a reason they begged to move though....

i definitely like the home and home schedule but i am not a fan of being the only canadian team in our conference when the other canadian teams are bunched together in two others....we are going to be the forgotten child even more than we would be otherwise.

we never had rivalries in the norris division...we had them in the smythe....i don't think that there will ever be rivalries of any consequence with cities where nobody could even find us on a map and that we have nothing in common with.

not loving the conference at all.

winnipeg is not a midwestern city.....canada is divided in two halves, not three parts like the US....we relate to western canadian cities, not the american midwest.

detroit, chicago, st. louis, columbus and nashville have nothing to do with winnipeg.....we are not part of their region in any way....winnipeg doesnt look east, it looks west.

why do people feel the need to ***** and complain about everything.

Why do we need to be in the same division as other canadian teams?

So we can get beat the **** up by edmonton and vancouver all over again?

pass to that

we have a better shot in this division imo

detroit will drop off (maybe... hopefully?)
nashville wont be **** when weber and suter leave
columbus just ****ing stinks
we will be in the playoffs
once you get there anything can happen

Whether you accept it or not, Winnipeg IS a midwestern city by many standards. And I think it LOOKS and FEELS more midwestern than Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon or Regina. That is what makes Winnipeg unique among "western" Canadian cities, and I quite like that distinction.

I guess they'll be pleasantly surprised when they find out we're not boring? And Minnesota isn't boring to watch this year with Yeo behind the bench.
