Follow-up on my post about small-scale realignment every three seasons ...
Alignment 2012: The NHL decides to go with an Original Six division for three years, likely to be broken up after that. Hey, why not? Shake things up for a bit, and it'd be a fun thing for the fans. Five divisions of six teams each, I'll leave the naming of these divisions up to more creative minds. Division rivals play four times, and everybody else plays twice or four times.
Detroit Red Wings
New York Rangers
Toronto Maple Leafs
This would leave a glut of Eastern teams that would have to be put together. Luckily, they're mostly existing rivals with each other.
New Jersey Devils
New York Islanders
And the left-overs division, with the star-power of the Pens to prop it up (hey, somebody has to play that role in this alignment)
Columbus Blue Jackets
Tampa Bay Lightning
The Midwestern teams, minus Chicago & Detroit
St. Louis Blues
The Western-most teams, this division will be the one unlikely to change at any point
Los Angeles Kings
San Jose Sharks
