New NHL Alignment Approved: TB & FLA come on up!

You're the next contestants in the Northeast Division!

Per Dreger and Bob McKenzie, the four conference alignment plan was approved tonight. The NE division will remain intact and add Tampa and Florida. Better than Detroit and Pittsburgh, I guess.

DarrenDreger: Discussion and vote to approve 4 conf realignment took an hour.

TSNBobMcKenzie: New four conference format gets approval by NHL B of G.

Discuss. Or don't.

I was hoping for Detroit and Pittsburgh in the North East.

The goal is to win the Stanley Cup and I think having stiff competition like that can do one of either two things to an organization:

1- bring out your best.

2- tuck tail and run and use the too competitive excuse.

Imagine having Detroit, Pittsburgh and Boston in the same division? Time to sink or swim.

I would have loved that!

Tampa and Florida, eh? Interesting. Tampa will be pretty average/bad soon, and who knows with Florida... Don't mind this at all.

Good break for Buffalo. Pittsburgh and possibly Detroit, as had been discussed a month ago, would've been tough. Florida is on the come and Tampa has had success, but they aren't the Pens and Wings.

okay just so people know, there is no more east vs west, those are gone, there are 4 separate Conferences now, in the regular season every team plays a home and home against every team in the league, and the remaining game will be played with in the conference, so divisions are gone, east vs west is gone

the top 4 teams from each conference makes the playoffs with the first two rounds being within the conference, than the teams that win their conferences are reseeded so 1 vs 4 2vs3, and like I said earlier east and west are gone so we could have a buffalo vs philly stanley cup finals or a Boston vs New York finals

As I posted in the other thread:

If it's our current division plus the Florida teams I don't mind too much. We'd be in a 7 team division, so greater chance of making the playoffs if the top 4 teams from each division make it. Plus, we wouldn't be in with the powerhouses like Detroit, Philly, and Pittsburgh.

It seems like at this point Boston is the main obstacle to getting into the "final 4" the next couple of years.

So we are going to have 2 - 7 team and 2 8 team conferences?

How will that work for scheduling?

Because we would have 6 teams to play X number of times and the two 8 team conferences would have 7 teams to play X number of times. Which I would presume would have to be the same for each conference.

This is going to be interesting.

EDIT: I guess my question was answered when I was typing out my reply.

Does this mean there will no longer be a Prince of Wales trophy and Clarence Campbell trophy handed out after the "conference finals'?

There will be those two, plus a Moneybags Gary Bettman Trophy and a Shanabanner Trophy.

Wonder how they decide which conference plays which conference in the semis?

We automatically get the philly conference winner?

Best case scenario for the Sabres. Florida and TB are pretty hit of miss year over year, and being in a conference of 7 is an advantage (if it's indeed top 4 from each going to the playoffs). The two more Western conferences have it tough with eight, particularly the one with SJ, LA, Van, etc.
