Biggest Rival?

I know over time rivals change as well, depending on the strength of two teams against each other. But I was curious, who do you guys feel our best rivalries are against?

Unfortunately, I don't feel the Sharks are much of one because they always seem to have our number.

Beyond that, I do like our match ups against the other Pacific Division rivals, as they are close games, and they do matter as well.

Of course the Red Wings, making the playoffs the past 2 years, and especially taking them to game 7 of the first round 2 years ago, that always helps build a rival.

I saw a thread that said the NHLPA blocked realignment, and that got me thinking as to who our biggest rivals were right now in your opinions.

On top of that, I also made threads in every pacific division forum as to what their fan's viewpoint was on us, as the Coyotes. If they want to partake in this conversation here as well, I welcome it.

I wish I would have followed the team more back when I was in high school and such, but I didn't live in Phoenix, ever, so I just recently got more involved with the team, and just sports in general while living on my own. Maybe you guys could help me understand past rivalries and current rivalries a bit more?

I don't give a **** about them. They commented all year last year that we were gone, and overshot the thought of the Thrashers leaving. They should have commented on how the town our team resides in wanted to pay millions of dollars to keep our team here, but they didn't care about our fan base. That just boils me.

To answer your question we dont have rival that us big and popular enough to be ranked among the best and certainly when not even our miserable excuse for to be called a goon doesnt even try to live up to that title.

On a serious note, the Wings. They took it to us last year in the playoffs and knocked us out two years in a row. If we are to measure ourselves as a team, we have to measure ourselves against the Wings. I have immense respect for that organization, and look forward to beating them in a playoff series one year.

Until we can beat them in a playoff series they aren't even a real rival to us.

If we're talking in the division, then it should be the Kings. The proximity, the nature of the games, the whole "Phoenix is LA's ugly stepchild" thing.

Any other team...definitely the Wings. and the Flyers.

Theoretically it should be the Kings. But quite a few of our fans were Kings fans before and the Kings have only a passing interest in us, they're too busy with the Ducks and Sharks. The Pacific is far friendlier than the other divisions. It cant be Detroit even though we dislike them, there's no comparison between the teams. We dont really have real rivals, just a few acrimonious relationships. Philly with the Sean Burke saga, Ducks with the Nedved hit, Dallas for Hatcher, Detroit for the playoffs/fans, Winnipeg for the mutual mud-flinging.

Without geographic rivals, Playoff rivalry has to suffice. That means Detroit. I know that it isn't mutual. Many fan bases hate the Yankees, but to a Yankee fan there is Boston, and the rest are just secondary.

Most of the Winnipeg and Phoenix fanbases hate each other but the 2 teams arent close to being a rival.

The Winnipeg fan base wanted to deprive our fan base of our team. That doesn't make for a rivalry, just animosity. While I admit that I take pleasure seeing that my old label for their city still has legs after two years, popping up now and again on their own boards, they aren't rivals. They aren't even enemies anymore as the fate of the Coyotes is no longer affected by them.

I hate Dallas more than any other team in our division and the games always seem to be chippy.

And lets be honest, who doesnt hate the Red Wings....

To me for something to be called a rivalry it has to be a two way thing, and i don't think there is any team in the league that truly cares enough about facing the Yotes to say we have a true rival. Dallas may be the closest thing we have imo, but I don't truly know how that team or fanbase really feels. Detroit has much bigger fish to fry (SJ, Chi etc...) regardless of how the Yotes, or we the fans, feel after the last two playoffs.

The Wings. Well, at least to me, since I've always hated them. Was a hard time for me when the Wizard with them...

I think the Red Wings would have to be the biggest rival of the Coyotes, but for a true rivalry I think it has to be 2 sided. For the Red Wings the Coyotes are just another team, there is no rivalry from their side. The Red Wings have dispatched this this team from the playoffs 4 times in the past 15-16 years. San Jose knocked the Coyotes twice and Anaheim & St. Louis once each.

I don't think you can say the Coyotes have a true rivalry though, partially for what I said previously about both sides have to see it as a rivalry. That's what makes some of the great rivalries in the league like the Bruins-Habs, Hawks-Wings, Rangers-Islanders, etc. Usually being in the same division greatly improves the rivalry, but more importantly something has to have happened on both sides of the rivalry to create animosity.

The Wings-Avs rivalry in the 90's and 2000's were built on the conference finals matchups that they had and the hit by Claude Lemieux.
