True but we also lost to the Leafs and that might cost us a lot more at the end of the year cause there won't be a tie breaker between Montreal and Boston that's for sure! We might have with Toronto though

Habs are 5 points behind the Leafs. With the current bogus points system, say we win 6 of ten while the Leafs lose 6 of ten. You'd think that would make a meaningful difference but it's not necessarily so. Say we go 6-3-1 and they go 4-3-3. We get 13 points, they get 11. We only make up 2 POINTS.
The NHL has put in a system that makes the standings look a lot closer than they really are because while you're earning two points the teams you're chasing may well be splitting three. Gaining points and passing multiple teams in the standings is far more difficult than it used to be thanks to all those 3-point games. Statistically it's already a major uphill climb for the Habs to bank enough points to make a playoff spot secure. We don't know how many points the Habs would need, but even the best case scenarios require them to play well over .500 for the rest of the season. Well over.
That is exclusively Molson's call, and unfortunately, Gauthier cannot do anything too drastic before knowing his boss's intentions. There are only four possible scenarios:
1) Gomez plays for the Habs next season.
2) Gomez is traded before next season.
3) Gomez is bought out.
4) Gomez is burried.
Number 2 is the least probable. There isn't a single GM that will trade for Gomez. The ''but zomg thay wuld save 2millions!!!1oone'' argument is dumb, as it ignores the fact that they would still be paying 5.5M$ for a completly useless player and that Tallon is proving that overpaying marginal players is better than overpaying worthless ones.
Number 1 is what we all fear. If it happens, it sends a clear message that Gauthier's hands are tied and Molson is in it only for the money.
Number 3 seems like a bad option. The team would only save 4M$ and 3M$ on the cap space in the following two years, while lose 1.6M$ the following two.
Number 4 is the ideal situation for Gauthier and the fans, but obviously the worst for Molson's wallet (assuming salary is taken on instead of Gomez). Molson loses 10M$ over two years, but Gauthier gets to play with 7.3M$ extra. Unfortunately, he will probably give that money to Wade Redden

But I doubt that equalizes the loss... If we can get a big name, than that might bring a few mil in value for star recognition -- jerseys, increase in ticket prices, higher ratings
but it'll take many extra playoff games as a result of replacing Gomez to make this a smart ''business decision''
Unfortunately, I believe this franchise will continue to be run like a business and not an elite sports franchise that does whatever it takes to win.

No, you can't add it like that. Molson will pay Gomez 10M$ no matter what, and he will spend up to the cap no matter what. So the difference between a team that spends to the cap two years in a row and a team that does the same thing with Gomez in the minors is 10M$.

We are too small to be a cycling team, and it appeared we were heading towards an offense being generated from the blueline last year. I thought they would keep Wiz, wait for Markov and have a nice backend to generate shots and opportunities from on the PP and even strength.
So they let Wiz walk, tell Subban to be more responsible (take less chances) and all this without knowing what Markov's injury was really about.
What is the gameplan here? JM likes a hard forechecking team, but again he doesn't have the size up front to carry this out. Come playoff time, we are beatup and worn out and the blueline is hobbling into the post-season.

You make a good point, but they don't necessarily replace all of Gomez' salary. Maybe if they bury Gomez they'd take a little more "flexibility" into next season than they have recently.
If you think Molson is happy with this year's results then you're totally wrong. Not only we're out of the playoffs but TV ratings have been down 14% comparing to las year. These have direct impact to financial results.

I don't. They don't even know how to work the refs when, apart from Subban they're really built to do that. In fact they're the worst team at manipulating the calls that maybe I've ever seen. OT I know, but it speaks to their lack of a cohesive team philosophy to me.
