I've got to wonder about the timing. The Lightning just had a few days off, and now 'ESPN' thinks they're on the verge of a deal?

I'm assuming this is for a roster player.

I suppose the news could inspire the players, but it'd possibly take players out of the roster tonight, or make relevant players wonder if their job has just been taken by the acquisition of a roster player.

Meanwhile, the threat of being traded still works. Not on the goalies though.

Yzerman just tried to bring in miettinen, he could very well be trying to do something again. But if you'd ask him he'd probably say something like he's always looking for a way to upgrade our team.

Other than Ellis for McElhinney (who was immediately waived), I don't think Yzerman has traded any players off the team's roster.

Here are his trades and non offseason signings for players to put on the team:

Roloson - prospect
Brewer - pick & prospect
Bergeron - free agent
Gervais - future considerations
Miettinen - free agent

You could count the Meszaros and Walker trades if you want, but that was more of a clean up job before we put our team on the ice.

Wouldn't you think that is more because once he realised that they had a team that could contend, he wanted to put them into the best possible position to do so? Moving a roster player is counter productive to improving your success if you want to add to your existing group that is performing above expectations. Because last year, the lightning were performing above expectations.

What's been happened is trading what limited organizational depth we had has been done. And now we've lost the last 7 of 8. Time to shake up a bit to see if the season can't get back on track? I wouldn't expect SFY to sell yet should he decide to go that route.

I dunno what the plan is going to be here, but it isn't a fun position to be in for SFY. Let's hope he can pull a rabbit out of a hat and rob someone in a trade for a legit blueliner...

Goalie.

Goalie comes first. If we don't have a good goalie, nothing SFY does will matter.

Very true, but a lot of teams, especially at the deadline trade a combo of picks and prospects with their own players to upgrade a players spot. For example Pittsburgh traded away Armstrong and Christenssen plus to get Hossa and Dupuis for their run. Those were 2 good players for the Penguins at the time but the deal helped improved those two forward spots.

So far Yzerman hasn't swapped any roster players or with a package to get roster players. Last season it was intentional because he liked the team he had, and he didn't want to give up anything. But even this season where things have gone wrong, he hasn't traded anybody yet. He's tried to solve the problem by calling up Tyrell and secondly going after Miettinen. Up to this point he's been adding without subtracting so it's a question if he will eventually resort to moving someone now.

In all honesty, this team is comprised of a third line with some star players. The D and goalie positions definetely need some tweaking. But what concerns me is the lack of competitiveness. We lose almost every battle for the puck right now and we don't battle back hard enough to take it back.

We can't, or we get a penalty.

Hi Darren,

What is going to be done to fix the falling Lightning?

Gino Doucette

A: Gino, tough question. At the moment, defence and goaltending appear to be Tampa Bay's biggest issues, although I'm not willing to throw Dwayne Roloson under the bus. He's a fiercely competitive guy who may not be able to handle a full season at this stage of his dimming career, but I trust there is still enough in the tank to help stabilize his team. Defensively, the Lightning aren't good enough, but because of the big contracts this team has to contend with, fixing the holes in season is tough to do. Lecavalier's mammoth term and salary obviously haunts this organization, largely because he's closer to a third line player now than a game-breaker. And as well as Tampa Bay did last season, their success was based more on riding momentum then it was the pure readiness of this franchise to move to the next level. There are still a few growing pains the Lightning have to push through, but they are well coached, well managed and have a great stable of young players.
OK, so which one of YOU is Gino Douchette?

On a side note, how can one say Vinny is a 3rd line player???

Reading TSN for Lightning news/opinion is like going to a fishing site to learn about snowboarding.

What an idiot How the heck is Vinny playing like a 3rd liner? I'm surprised Darren didn't say the solution was to trade him to Toronto or Montreal.

And even in the games he didn't get a goal or a point he had all those nifty moves that make you go "" and remind you of better days and that only a handful of players in the league could pull off in tight in-game situations like he does... Vinny still is a 1st line center on at least 5 teams in the league, maybe even closer to 10. But what do we know, right?

V$s salary is meaningless. Do I wish he didn't sign that big of a deal? Yes, but what about the idiots that offered it to him? The cap hit is not that bad.

His worth to the organization far outweighs his points on the ice. However, if you look at his career numbers, he is on par with most of his non-injury years. The outliers were the 108 and 92 point seasons on teams that only had his line, during his prime.

Still a beast down low and solid 2nd line center on our team behind Stammer. Could be 1st line center on more than a few NHL teams.

It's like Jacque Lemaire said, "If they knew the game as well as they think they do, they'd be working in the game."

while i had a too optimistic view for Vinny this season (thought/hoped he would score 90-100) he still has continued his strong play from the playoffs and i think the points dont reflect his offensive contribution this year

so hopefully if he keeps playing like this the production will start to come

The Red Bulls salute has begun, and Marty Turco let in only one goal on 24 shots faced from Pardubice HC. The previous winner of the Czech Extraliga.

It's important to note that the Czech Extraliga > Erste Bank Hockey League, although EC Red Bull Salzburg, who have a bit of a dynasty going, did load up for this tournament (Akim Aliu and Tyler Redenbach, to go along with Turco)

Turco's stats through the first game. (2-1 win)
GAA: 1.00
Save %: 95.8

They play Linkopings today.

Idea.

We got a 41-year old Roloson to replace the 28-year old Mike Smith.

13 year difference.

What if we find a 55-year old goalie to replace Roloson now? ((41+1)+13)

I present to you, Swedish Division 4 club IK Raid's Kai Martin Löwen-Åberg

http://eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=70934

They've also got a goalie born in 1961.

Maybe we can talk Mike Liut out of retirement.

Answer: Dominik Hasek

Played in Detriot, so there's the SFY connection.

Him and Osgood won a cup as an old guy tandem. This is proven to work, so why not and older guy tandem with Roloson?

Speaking of Roloson, they played together in Buffalo, so his mentor returns to help him out.

Hasek played last year, but is 'taking time out from hockey'.
