We may not want Gleason

Posted in the Hurricanes boards asking about Gleason. Only got 9 replies but after poking around the Carolina threads a little bit I think the general consensus of him is that he's a #4-6 Dman who is capable of showing signs of being good, not great.

I dont want to trade Hammer for him, or any of our top prospects. I know our team needs D but Gleason might not be the best guy.

Anyone who wanted Gleason certainly didn't want to move Hammer for him. He's a guy we'd bring in to move Montador into the #6 role.

What he said.

In addition to that, he's also a guy we pay very little for as a UFA via pick and/or prospect... so you don't have to lose any productive spots from your NHL roster.

This. He's a UFA after this year and is similar to Campoli in skill, slightly better. If Carolina tanks I'm sure they'll move him and they apparently want forwards. If we're a couple of pieces from being a real contender nearing the deadline I'd have no problem moving Bickell + picks (not firsts) or a prospect for him.

Question is if Bickell has any value by then, can't see him playing much with the way things are going...

Gleason would be better with the Hawks and as others have said, Gleason wouldn't cost a ton as he is an upcoming UFA. It wouldn't cost us Hammer, but the trade proposal I made you may be refering to also brought us Sutter, a much more valuable asset.

Bickell and a first or Bickell and a middling prospect or two would be all I'd offer.

If Bowman offered a 1st straight up today, they'd likely take it. Ian White was traded for a late 2nd last year.

Not sure if you are comparing their playing styles or impact level, but they don't play the same game at all. Campoli is more skilled and a better PMD.

Gleason is more of a physical, defensive Dman. He is more in the mold of Brad Stuart, Chris Phillips, ect type player. Basically Brooks Orpik, not quite as good defensively.

I think he'd be perfect on this team. Not sure what side he plays, but I'd love Keith-Seabrook, Leddy-Orpik, Hjalmarsson-Montador. Perfect mixture of offensive and defensive players in my mind. Gleason is the Hurricane's #1 PKer.. we could definitely use him.

Gleason is a good #4 who plays well defensively and is fairly mobile

He is nothing like Campoli

Yeah, skill level/impact level. Point is, he'd be a #4 or #5 here and is exactly the type of player we need as you said. Good skater, good positioning, good on the PK and can move the puck decently. He's a lot like Hammer in a lot of ways. Would fit like a glove and if he had a good stint here might even be re-signable.

Agree 100%. Better comparison IMO for people with some history would be a Keith Carney type of player.

Not sure I'd want 3 more years after this one, at $4.5M for each year... Actually, I'm positive that I don't want that for an injury prone winger unless we get him for free, and someone else gets Iginla and Doan.

So trade Bruno or keep him on the 4th line? He seems to have found a home on the 4th line.

keep Bruno, trade Bickell and scratch Mayers/Carcillo/Smith in rotation. And we won't be healthy all season long

Bozak wouldn't be better than what we have (Kane, Sharp, Bolland and even Krüger) in this spot...

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Carolina might consider trading Ward... perfect Goalie for us, but has a high Cap Hit. I'd still would like to get him.

No way, not at a 6.3M cap hit for 4 more years after this one. Not to mention what would we give up? You're going to pay through the nose for their franchise goalie. Crawford obviously goes, probably one of Morin or Saad as well?

You wouldn't want Ward?

He is only 27 and an elite goalie who is clutch in playoffs

If you can upgrade from Crawford to Ward you do it ,, His cap hit isn't terrible

Crawford + Morin + + + ,, I would have no problems giving up that package for Ward
