I love Kelly, but Zack Smith is doing the same job right now at a fraction of the price.

As for buying UFAs, I think next season is a little early for trying to get any big names, I like the Ruutu idea if both Filatov and Alfredsson are not on the team next year.

Volchenkov - Wanted to stay, we wanted to go after a puck-moving D.
Chara wanted to stay but after Muckler traded his good friend Hossa after resigning him he wanted to change scenery. Volchy wanted to stay but he wanted a longer term and money then we were willing to offer so we opted for Gonchar.

Gonchar is better than Volchenkov anyway.

With that said if we don't take a shot at Parise I doubt we go for anyone. Semin would be nice if MacLean could get him to play. Other than that I can't see us going for anyone big.

I would be surprised if Ottawa went after Semin, in fact, I will be surprised if he is still in the NHL next season because of what is being said about him. There are just too many questions surrounding this guy being lazy, a locker room problem & not playing defensively. I think Murray like most GMs these days are thinking twice about Russian players, he took a chance on Filatov & that hasn't turn out very well yet & may never. Didn't Washington have to sue Semin to come back to NA to play? Maybe he wants to go back to Russia to play hockey there.

I would also be surprised if NJ does not re-sign their captain, I think they will find a way unless he wants out of NJ. He would be a guy Murray would go after in free agency & could throw big dollars his way.

Murray will end up bidding against himself, and pay Penner $40M over 8 years.

Different era... combine Melnyk with no salary cap and those guys would probably all still be Sens.

The thought of anyone being stupid enough to sign Penner to an 8-year, $5mil/year deal makes me want to kick a baby.

... and I even have kids.
