A more accurate quote

Quote:
Michael Sauer, who has missed the last six games, has resumed light off-ice activity but “is not going to be with us for a bit,” Tortorella added.

Phaneuf hit Sauer with a forearm. Not a shoulder. Forearm to Sauer's head. Helmet pops off. Phaneuf lifts his left forearm to make contact.

Typical Phaneuf

Sticking with my initial opinion that the Phaneuf hit was clean. I was optimistic for a relatively quick return, but "a while" is a very ominous choice of words. Torts could have said "taking it day-by-day" or something of the like but he sounds pretty certain Sauer is quite far off at this point.

I take it by "awhile" they mean somewhere around the all-star break.

RangerBoy just posted the more accurate quote.

"A bit" certainly doesn't signify long term, IMO.

I think Sauer and Staal will be back before the trade deadline.

Feb. 27th.

30 games from now. 70 days.

With 22 games remaining from that point until the playoffs.

That's a good amount of games for them to get their games back before the playoffs.

I think it's really hard to say how long he'll be out. He could be back before Staal if the symptoms go away and he feels good in the next week. He hasn't lost as much conditioning as Staal and so has less work to do to get back into game shape

Or he could be out awhile if symptoms persist

Kind of sounds like he's been taking it easy and they're going to evaluate him and see where he's at, whether he can resume some normal skating, etc

let's just say "awhile" will probably mean "not before Staal gets back"

Giroux is returning tonight or on Friday. Less than 2 weeks after suffering a concussion. Are the Flyers crazy and dumb? We don't want to see Giroux taking more tests on 24/7 if he takes another hit to the head.

Richards suffered his concussion 3 weeks ago and he is close to returning.

Mike Richards was cleared to play. Said he took all the tests Tues and feels fine.

Milan Michalek is close to returning.

Michael Sauer (concussion) - The Rangers defenseman was at Greenburgh Wednesday morning, a surprise considering he really hasn't been around the team since his injury early this month against Toronto. Sauer, who reportedly has begun light workouts on his own, was examined by a member of the team's staff. He declined to speak to reporters and is still out indefinitely.

Not with head injuries.

When I hear "a while" when it comes to concussions, it means "we have no ****ing clue"

As of now Im hoping Sauer and Staal both return together by the all star break. Cant take any chances, especially since staal is coming off this long period out and sauer has a history of concussions.

Defenseman Michael Sauer, sidelined with a concussion since Dec. 5, has been feeling better, but is not close to beginning the regimen that will lead to a return.

Torts says Mike Sauer (concussion), who was in Philly, is "working out
Beyond Sauer working out today, though, Tortorella doesn't have an update on concussed defenseman.

NYP_Brooksie Larry Brooks
When Michael Sauer is ready, Tortorella will have very interesting decision: whether to go back to Staal/Girardi, McDonagh/Sauer or pair Staal with Sauer while leaving McDonagh with Girardi...this assuming, of course, previously concussed D remain healthy

And assuming we want to relegate Del Zotto's minutes, the way he has been playing.

The left side of our D (McDonagh, Del Zotto, Staal) is currently superior to the right side (Girardi, Sauer, Bickel/Eminger)

I'd go back to Staal/Girardi. McDonagh and Girardi have looked great together, but let's remember that Staal and Girardi have played for years together also and have looked just as good.

But either way, it will probably be another 5-10 games before Tortorella decides to move Staal up.

I think being thrust into the top 4 penalty kill and all has really improved Del Zotto's defensive game. Trial by fire was a success as it was his rookie year here.

Allows him to augment his offensive game stemming from his defensive game. I wouldn't want to take his minutes away just because Sauer returns.

I think that once Sauer comes back Mcdonough and him become the pairing, and Staal and Girardi are once again reunited.

This allows us to play the pairings a lot more evenly and be a lot fresher in the playoffs than we normally have been.

Staal-Girardi - 22-24 min a game
Mcdonough-Sauer- 20-21 min
MDZ-Stralman - MDZ (prob like 18-20 min a game depending on powerplays) Stralman 14-17 min

I think its going to take a lot more than people expect to get Staal back on that top pair with Girardi, and I honestly think it should be a long slow process. IMO it stays MCD-Girardi until sauer comes back, then torts should make the switch. By then staal should be good and it works out perfect.

Staal will be getting 18-20 minutes in a game or two. 3-4 more games till he will be getting easily 20+ minutes again.

Why should it be a long slow process? He is not getting over his concussion anymore. He is just getting back into game shape. Which shouldnt take more then another week or two max.

how long did Staal take between when he started working out and the WC? that would probably be a best case time frame for seeing Sauer return. by then Staal will be at full speed and Sauer will actually probably need reduced minutes to get up to speed. You'll probably see him not get as many special teams minutes at first but depending on the severity of the original concussion, he might get more minutes sooner (relative time frame) than Staal sees more minutes

I'm all for keeping McD-Girardi together. If it ain't broke... Staal has the ability/potential to raise another D-man's game. The real trick is with McD, Staal, and MDZ, we have 3 very capable LD that all need to get minutes. In a game with no penalties, you could give those three all 20 even minutes. So assuming you could give all three pairings the same ice time, the question for me is who would you want to be our last D-man?

McD-Girardi, MDZ-Sauer, Staal-???

Bickel? Eminger? Stralman?
Erixon might be ready next season. in 2-3 years, McIlrath will probably be ready. Who knows who Sather might want to sign/resign as well. hard choices! Bickel for toughness? Stralman for his offensive potential?

Andrew Gross tweets that there is no update on defenseman Michael Sauer.

Sauer, on Wednesday, was said to be working out after having a few “good days.”

with the team doing well its important Sauer is back a few weeks before the deadline. That way the team wont need to go after a rental

With Sauer I think realistically, we're talking after the All-Star break for him to get even cleared for contact.

They wouldnt get a rental if they expected him back, in fact I dont think there is any need or logic in acquiring defensemen. If they are going to get a rental or make a trade in general, get another goal scorer. Personally hoping Sauer is back mid February which is 2 weeks before the trade deadline anyway.

Right defenseman Michael Sauer continues to make progress in his recovery from the concussion he suffered on Dec. 5. He has been symptom-free for at least a couple of weeks and is doing light physical activity such as riding a stationary bike, but he is not close to returning.
