If we are under the cap regardless of Redden being on the team or not the man should have a chance. Like him or not, he didn't do anything wrong to not let him battle for the spot.

If he can make this team better then he should make the team. Forget salary, if he's the best 6th D option we have, then lets go for it.

*This is continugent on a couple of assumptions like the NYR being under the salary cap regardless and that him being on the team doesn't cause any contract issues.

Most likely shut down for the year. It's a short season. He could use the extra recovery time.

I think he's done. He should retire in my opinion.

Dec. 5, 2011 is when he was injured. So over 13 months now.

Wish a mod would change the thread title so that it accurately reflected the situation. Might stop some of the questions

cheers. i knew it was around the new year but wasnt sure which one. gosh, 13 months and he's not back. probably not gonna happen now. i feel bad for him. hope he can manage day-to-day.
the hit...was the point of contact the head? or was it the fall that caused the damage? i can't really tell on the replay.

The hit knocked his helmet off and he hit the back of his head on the dasher

David Perron missed almost 13 months with a concussion but he was feeling better and working out by this point

i had assume phaneuf hit him in the head. if he didn't..if he hit him hard in the shoulder or chest and knocked him backward, i can forgive. i just hate players going after opponents' heads. it shows a lack of respect. but a big hit into a guy's chest is fine. tough luck. anyhow, thanks for the feedback. i'm pretty psyched for hockey.

Nope, Sauer sold out to keep the puck in and Phaneuf delivered what I thought was a completely clean (but devestating) hit to Sauer - shoulder to chest, causing him to topple backwards. Because he sold out and left himself exposed to keep the puck in, he went flying; because he wore his chin strap loose, his helmet immediately flew off due to the force of the hit; and then, because of where he was on the ice, he came down so that the back of his head hit the corner of the dasher.

Bad luck all around (but for the chin strap thing), but a clean hit IMO.

This is accurate with one exception. I've read that the chin strap was actually broken during this play so loose or tight didn't really matter since the thing broke. Really bad luck all around for Mike. I wish him the best. Continually hoping for good news for him.

Broken or not, Mike always wore it way too lose for my tastes - I don't think it would have made a difference.

True. I guess we will never know. I'm really starting to shift my hopes for mike away from hockey... Just hoping the guy can get to the point where his day to day life in unencumbered by this injury.

Concussions take time. That's what Mike's doing. Just because he's shut down for the year doesn't mean he's finished. You guys come to conclusions way too quickly.

Really hope you are right. I was hoping that with a year off, he would be much closer than he's now. Was kind of hoping the Rangers would say they are testing him now, soon he'll start practicing and should be ready to start getting in shape for the playoffs in a couple of months. But alas, that's not the case.

What's to test if he's still having symptoms?

That's the point. I was hoping he's not having symptoms and that they could proceed to testing, but not such luck.

Last I checked, the Rangers haven't said anything. Maloney, Brooks etc.

I'd like to hear from the team.

Is his day-to-day life being affected by this or is it just his athlete's life?

I am still operating under the belief he will never play again. I assume the Rangers are as well. I hope he comes back. If he does, great! If not, then the Rangers need to be proactive for now and plan as if he'll never play again.

That's how the NYR have to look at it.

What a family history. 4 brothers, 2 in the NHL 1 in the NFL, one an NHL draft pick - all suffer career ending injuries (potentially in Mike's case).

Another reason is that he'll be a completely different player in terms of where his level will be at. He Cracks top-4 before but now with an improving DZ and certain pieces moving in the future, even if he plays on the second pairing, he'll still end up being the 6th dman assuming that his injury takes a toll on his game.

If he's being affected in his Day to day then you can probably count him out of a pro career at this point.
