Finished off a presentation to my county's sports commission about a hockey tournament and its benefits, and then polished off my stats project. Rough couple of hours.

Management test tomorrow, then CSCI project and test Thursday. LET'S DO THIS *****!

Had elementary calculus today. Easy for the most part since I took it in high school but I totally messed up a curve sketching question.

Microecon on Wednesday, stats on Thursday, history on Monday.

Had my philosophy exam today. Gosh I hate my teacher... He asks for stuff he talked about in class, but on which he didn't put any emphasis. All the stuff he repeated 5+ times weren't at the exam. ~.~ Hoping for a grade on my group average, which should be 75... Just to keep myself above it.

Anyways, 2 exams left, one in biology wednesday and the other in chemistry next monday. Now this is gonna be easy stuff and I won't need to study.

Had Networking today. The thing that confuses me is the fact that the final is only worth 11% of my grade. Oddly low. But in a way, it's good, because I didn't do well on it at all... so it doesn't count for very much, and I still pass the course with a pretty decent mark.

Java tomorrow morning, then Hardware on Wednesday, and then done.

I got my first grade all semester that wasn't an A today. To make matters worse, it was an A- and the deduction was outright nit-picking if you ask me. Felt like a pitcher who gave up a perfect game on an infield hit

Thats how I feel about Math and I am currently barely holding down a C(70.5) Need a 49 or better on my final to remain a C.

IF you prepared and you know integral calculus and the other one with derivatives you'll be fine

Be thankful that most people don't have to learn anything more than that

What would a qualifying exam look like

In my Master's program most of the tests were open-ended

Able to spin and manipulate answers to my advantage

It really varies from program to program.

Everyone in our department had three subject areas that are tailored to his/her area of specialty, mine were: methods, statistics, genetics. I had one test in each area, an in-class 4 hour exam, and a 48 hour take-home exam. So the entirety of the qualifying exam took about two weeks. There are no study guides, and the material can range from anything that is offered in the school. Everything was fair game, which totally stinks. This method of testing tends to be rare.

Most programs tend to do oral exams. Most often, what I've seen is that three areas are covered, and then that student's committee is given maybe 10 scientific papers in each area. Then on exam day, the committee will ask open ended questions about those papers. Another department I know of actually makes you do a quasi-defense or anti-thesis. Basically makes you present on a topic that is the "opposite" of what you're researching in preparation of defending your own work (this is usually a literature review and critical analysis of the present work).

So there's no steadfast way on how this qualifying exam is done. But the consensus is that it's a ***** and sucks away several months of your life. But it's part of the process of moving from PhD Student to PhD Candidate, for better or worse.

I tried attaching a copy of an analysis qualifying exam from the U of O (not the one I took, but from the previous year and very similar), but it was too big. I'll upload it somewhere else and link to it in a minute.

EDIT: put in on Dropbox, hopefully the link works:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/50991762/F04_Analysis_Qual.pdf

As for the comprehensive/oral exam, for me that consisted of getting grilled for 2 hours on minimal homeomorphisms and their associated crossed product C*-algebras. Then one member of my committee decides he's going to ask me some "easy questions" (he always talks that way), most of which I couldn't answer. Then they passed me.

Java final done. That was tough. No one in my class was very confident about it afterwards.

One more to go, then freedom.
