Finally Bobby Valentine gets fired. Took them long enough to do it.

162 games all comes down to this. Let's get this done and avenge last year Bravos.

Win one for the Chipper!

Don't watch baseball as much as I use to but watching the Braves fall apart in what is now looking to be Chipper's last game is painful.

**** **** call. A football style managers challenge overturns that no muss no fuss.

Horrid reaction by the fans. Absolutely embarrassing and a poor show of class. Especially on Chipper's last night.

Braves were clearly the superior team for 162 games and they're going home because of one game. One ****ing game. Even the Astros and Royals could win one game as godawful as they are.

I can't believe that my team's fanbase did that on what was potentially Chipper's last game ever at the time. That's something Philly fans would do.

A fly ball that can be caught by an infielder is an infield fly, regardless of where the ball lands.

The SS waved off Holiday and set under the ball, albiet in an incorrect position. The umpire is going to see that and call the infield fly every time.

Late, late, late, late call. Have no problem with the call because it was an easy play for the infielder IMO. But you can't call it as the ball hits the ground. Bad. And Holbrook is a vet.

And AWFUL defense. In the moment of the year. Didn't deserve it. No offense. Go O's and then go Yanks over O's.

N-Y-Y don't hate me. Good game to watch

Yeah. He could have made that, and you can't assume he's going to screw it up like he did.

Late yes though. Very late.

Not quite. It has to be in a place that the infielder can reach with "ordinary effort," on a play ordinarily handled by that position. The easiest play on that ball should have been by the left fielder. Regardless, the umpire is supposed to call infield fly immediately.

You also have to take into account why the rule was made. The infield fly rule was instituted to stop teams from intentionally dropping pop-ups and creating double plays. That was it's sole intent. There was no danger of that on this pop-up (as evidenced by the runners easily getting to 2nd and 3rd when the ball fell in), so it should never have been invoked.

I'm aware of the ordinary effort judgement.

The shortstop jogged back, stopped under where he thought the ball was coming down, and waved off the outfielder. That's easily ordinary effort. The umpire shouldn't be penalized because the SS screwed up his positioning.

If anything, Atlanta came out ahead. If the catch is made, it's 1st/2nd with 2 outs, no chance of advance. Because if the IFR call, and the ball hitting the ground, it was 2nd/3rd with 2 outs.

First scenario a base hit scores one, second base hit scores two.

I definitely disagree with you - he wasn't simply jogging back and appeared to cede the play to Holliday at the last second. But that is one of the problems: this rule is so freaking subjective, plus you have an umpire in a position that doesn't usually exist making this call. In a stupid one game play-in game.

Bottom line, though, is that the Braves had many other chances to win the game and blew it. This is on them, not the blown call.

Yeah, the late call by the extra ump who is only there for boundry/home run calls is sketchy. That should be the 3rd base ump's call to make if he's going to make it.

To me, it all changed up when he squared back towards the infield and stopped ranging back. The question is if he COULD have made the play on the ball if he took one more step, and one could call that ordinary effort. (Just not that ump.)

You're totally right though, 3 errors cost them the game. Not that play.

Kinda thinking about the Braves off-season, anyone else think the Braves and Twins make great trade partners? Mauer or Morneau perhaps

Yes, it was stupid. That call is not intended to benefit the defense.

In any case, the Braves didn't lose that game because of the call. They lost it because they couldn't play simple defense and they couldn't hit with RISP (the latter being the same story as the rest of the season).

I don't follow baseball much but I like the one game playoff. If you don't want to be in it, win more games. I like the regular season meaning a lot, especially a long one like baseball.
