But it's like an investment. By him rocking guys at a regular rate you are slowing down the opposition. The team is not good enough to do anything great right now so why not make use of resources to let teams know we are no longer a team filled with cream puffs, even if they are talented cream puffs. Some players in this league will slow down, think twice or twitch when they come into our zone as opposed to flying in unabaited. Much like Hall getting rocked and hurt, that will slow him down or make him change his style a bit.

Sutton is no treasure skill wise but I like the fact we finally have a guy who is going to hit to hurt and if necessary take a few games for the team.

Sutton is better than what foster was and he actually abuses people.

Btw, Sutton is plus 5 this year. And Peckham is +8

By the new NHL standards, I agree it is suspendable.

Sure, in the 70's that hit doesn't even register a response (or it triggers a bench clearing brawal), but in the 70's medical science did not understand the extent of concussions either.

Time marches on.

I don't agree with some of the calls but I have no sympathy for any player that intentionally targets the head. That is not the purpose of a hockey hit.

Sutton's first hit on Gab Lang was barely... but technically a suspension. There was clearly no intention to injure and Gab left himself wiiiide open. But because Shan wanted to make an example to a known repeat offender he gets 5 games.

This new hit is defiantly suspendedable but I truely didnt think it was that bad. Again despite leaving his feet I think this was not intention to injure. Ironicaly I do think the hit on Skinner was intention to injure but it was 100% clean. I would give Sutton a couple games max for the hit but because Shan doesnt like him you know it's gonna be huge.

All the people who are saying Sutton is a bum anyways... I couldnt disagree more. Our team really started to fall apart when he and Potter left the line up. I think Sutton has been ammazing for us in so many ways. Even offensivly... He has been great.

Losing Sutton for any length of time is going to hurt worse than we can imagine.

With Sutton out indefiantly. Hemsky playing hurt. Whitney playing hurt. Hall hurt. And Smyth playing horrid lately...Welcome back last place.

the inconsistency with suspensions is starting to look very similar to the colin campbell days of NHL discipline. i mean, tootoo drives the net and get two games cause he hit ryan miller. david booth on the other hand down pretty much the same play and gets nothing. even last night ovie lays a vicious spear into chris neil after neil hit him with a clean check and the NHL isn't going to do anything. and sutton is suspended indefinitely. this is pure horse**** and it is starting to show a double standard in NHL justice.

shanny needs to start working on the assumption the Player x did this to player Y and then hand out suspensions, not that ovie (superstar) spears neil (grinder) this shanahan era is starting to make me sick of the NHL

Give me a break buddy, OV barely touches him and Neil dives to the ice like he's been stabbed. I don't even know if OV did it on purpose, but to call it vicious is hilarious since he didn't even get a penalty and Neil got 2 for diving.

He deserves the suspension he'll get, but I don't get any hate for Sutton. He has done EXACTLY what he has always done as a NHLer for us, and gave us some desperately needed sandpaper in our line up.

Regardless of the direction the "new NHL" is going in, there is still room for a guy like Andy Sutton on a competitive team.

this suspension might increase his trade value around the deadline. At least he is visible and someone the other gm's might be talking about.

This I do agree with. I would have loved that player against the boards to be Clutterbuck, Cooke, Avery etc.

I don't think that Sutton has deterred opposition players one iota. The Oilers lack overall team toughness.

Seriously I know how much Oiler fans hate Clutterbuck (dunno why though), but he's not in the same category as the other two.

Also, the hit wasn't even that bad....

I think sutton is better than some pylon who doesn't hit...He's a good 6/7d to have around, and I dont see all the bashing. He needs some discipline from the coaches to stop taking too many penalties though.

However, better these checking penalties than those ***** stick penalties.

Shanahan could of easily let this one slide but he just likes going after the same players over and over, i've seen worse hits than this that haven't even been triggered as a suspension.

Last year all anyone could do was cry about how soft our team was. Well guess what? Outside of Sutton and Hordichuk, we still are. Sutton was a charging bull last night. He was smokin fools and lighting up suckas like it was Christmas eve on Candy Cane Lane.

If you dont see the value in that then there is really no point in any discussion.

He was taking penalties, costing the team and now will be suspended yet again. Yep, that's pretty valuable.

Shoulder to shoulder, intent to hurt. Elbow to face, intent to injure.

Watch the video in the op again and tell me if you think that Sutton's left elbow didn't make direct contact with the other guy's face...

Gotta agree with this . For years now we have watched our small , weak team get hit out of the arena and onto the IR .
Guys like Regher and Bieksa have made the Oilers their personal ***** .
Posters here have rightly been demanding a player that scares opponents ****less .

Well now we have one . And don't think the replays of his hits this year won't be making the pre-game screenings when teams come to Rexall .
That hit on Skinner was a beauty .... carry on please Mr Sutton .

* Edit - forgot to add that I have no trouble with him being suspended for the hit on Poni .
Too bad Shanny is going to let his personal prejudices dictate the term .

The point of having team toughness isn't to go around dishing out concussions to guys who haven't done jack to our team, is it?

I'd like to see someone take Cooke & Tootoo's heads off and I don't want to see someone take off Seguin's head or that of Alex Ponikarovsky.

You understand that pov, right?
