At what point do we call the rebuild complete?

Title says it all, I know where are not there yet but are we closing in on it anytime soon? Draft a couple more solid top 6 forwards and we are good to go? What say you?

Definitely not this year. Not being as bad as expected doesn't mean we stop rebuilding.

I was thinking 5 years but it might be closer to 3.

Too many unproven prospects to consider the rebuild almost over.

Better question is who do we move at the deadline if we're not in the hunt?

I figure a rebuild is done once you make the playoffs.

To me, rebuilding means finishing near the bottom to acquire better young assets compared to the other franchises. To do so, you also sell off vets for draft picks and prospects.

Once you make the playoffs, you're not getting top picks anymore. You can keep selling vets for young guys but then you'll never leave the rebuild.

Won't be this year, maybe next season, but we need to trade our expiring contracts away for more picks. We can't do a Philly re-build where we blow chunks one year and then almost in first place the next.

Our goaltending pool is still abysmal, we have good D prospects, but our forward prospects we need one more first and second rounder next year to complete it.

Rebuild is over when we can consistently make the playoffs.

If Lehner pans out, I could care less who else we have. Even if he doesn't pan out, we still have Anderson.

Two things:
1) we make the playoffs
2) the young players/prospects still have room for improvement, and have shown enough promise to say their is a good chance that we will be cup contenders in 2-3 years.

In other words, the cupboard is fully stocked, and there just needs some finishing touches on player development.

Yeah, I'd rather suck one more year to get a top forward, Colorado is still re-building.

Many teams make the playoffs lucky. Colorado rode a hot goaltender to make it, if it wasn't for Anderson they'd be lucky to finish 12-13th that year.

This, but I would add that and when the team is considered a legitimate Stanley Cup contender. Teams should also be looking to improve themselves in the short and long terms.

What I'm wondering is if whoever finishes 1st in their conference gets anything, assuming the conference champion is whoever wins two rounds.

I was tempted to add this, but figured that if we're making the playoffs consistently, it means the young core has developed. At that point, we just need to add complementary pieces to become a Cup contender. So I'd make a distinction between rebuilding (core pieces) and becoming a Contender (complementary pieces).

Honestly a rebuild should not have even took this long... just look at how quickly the GM in Minnesota rebuilt his team and restocked there farm system.

I'd say in Murray's eyes it will be when he is willing to trade some elite propspect or high draft choice for a particular player (need), rather than letting them develop.

Until then we need to stay the course and develop what we have.

Bobby Ryan as example - would cost us a ton. He'd be valuable, but would he be the one piece we need to get us over the top - No.

So we do not do that, we develop and draft.

When the pundints start talking about Ottawa needing to win while they have a window to do it.

As others have said, when we consistently compete in the playoffs and are a constant threat to winning the cup.

IMO it will still be another two years or so, but then again I am basing it off the bold prediction that Spezza gets shipped out.
