New XBox revealed today. I haven't watched the thing yet. Is it awesome? Anyone have details? The Forbes article is rather lacking.

It follows the same agenda Microsoft has been pushing for awhile now. Less focus on the games, more focus on an entire entertainment center.

It looks cool to me. Not sure I have enough context to judge it based on the specs, but smartglass and some of the expanded kinect features could really be something if they're developed and integrated properly.

The whole Xbox One looks amazing. Its all about being a home entertainment system. You can connect your cable provider to the console and the console allows you to surf through the channels using voice activation technology. For example, you can say "Watch ESPN" and it will take you directly to ESPN's channel. You can also see what your friends favorite shows are, what they are watching, etc.It also allows you to simultaneously play a game and watch tv or surf the web with smaller screens. They gave the example too of watching a sporting event on tv and getting live stats through the console. The gaming side of it will use a blu ray disk and the old Xbox 360 games will not be backwards compatible. I haven't really read up the specs of the games and the system yet I have only seen updates on twitter.

I'm more excited to see what the PS4 will be like. Glad to see Microsoft focusing more on the total entertainment package.

Game Informer's most recent issue has a pretty big section devoted to PS4. Worth a read; they go over hardware, software, interface, new capabilities.

I'm sure I'll buy it after grumbling about the price a bit.

Looking at Amazon pre-order stuff, I think the price for games is much more outrageous. $99 for all the XBox One titles.

I'd be decently surprised if the PS4 doesn't approach that price point as well. They have no reason not to.

Working in the gaming industry I was not surprised at all. Not only do they need room to work down from for longevity but let us not forget the price points of ps3 and xbox when they first came out.

It's next-gen of course the prices weren't going to go down!

i mean, hasn't basically every major console in the last 2+ generations started at that 400-500 mark? Not that surprising to me.

The game prices, as noted, will be the real pain. Plus all the other ancillary grumbles that will probably end up being similar for both systems.

When the 360 came out, you could get the core system for $300. I was expecting $400 for the XBone since significantly undercutting the PS3 was such a big selling point last time (and because they so royally ****ed up the announcement and this would be a nice way to atone), but I guess if they're forcing the Kinect onto us they've got to raise the price.

I am pretty pumped about the XBO launching (presumably) with a mech game in Titanfall.

$99 for one game? Hopefully that price drops fast that's a little outrageous. I think $60 for a 360 game is insane and the big titles there rarely drop. I still see COD MW2 and Black Ops I going for around $60

Some of the prices seem to have changed already to $59, but there are still some at the $99 price point (for PS4 as well).

Are both consoles just releasing a single version, so no tiers or anything?

Very curious to see how firmly MS sticks to some of the more... unpopular features. I guess sales will dictate just about everything.

XBox 360 and PS3 didn't have the additional tiers for at least a year, IIRC. I'm sure those will be added when sales start to lag.

It definitely will be interesting to see if MS scraps any of the rage-inducing stuff. I have no issue with requiring an internet connection in general, but the one login every 24 hours thing seems rife with problems. You won't be to play at all if there are long server outages, if you lose your internet connection for a few days, etc.. I also worry that the cloud computing will make any games completely unplayable whenever MS shuts the servers down for it's next gen console.

360 launched with both core and pro. I can't remember if PS3 launched with multiple HDD sizes or not.
