Sharks couldn't close out a regulation win in Chicago. Of course they couldn't. That was about 5 consecutive minutes of the most pathetic attempt to clear the puck 5 on 5 I've ever seen. The Sharks are weak. That is one mentally soft team right there.

Lot of games tonight while Blues are idle.

Pittsburgh leads early vs. Detroit 1-0.
Vancouver trails in Columbus 1-0 after one period.
Minnesota is in Winnipeg later (then host Chicago tomorrow)
San Jose is in Colorado, Calgary is in Nashville (for teams scuffling for the bottom seeds at the moment), and LA trails 1-0 after one period in Boston.

Rangers, Thursday night's opponent, home against Dallas and scoreless. The HBO 24/7 series will be featuring that Blues game in the 2d episode of the Winter Classic series, by the way. That should be fun, especially if the Blues can win it.

Detroit continues steamrolling along, beating Pittsburgh 4-1. Dallas also shut out the NYR 1-0. It's not even close that the new Norris is the toughest conference, yet finished a distant third in the massively biased HF poll. Columbus even beat Vancouver in the shootout, scoring all three times.

Minnesota and Winnipeg are playing a pretty good 1-1 game with a few minutes left in the 2d. Nashville is beating Calgary 2-1 early in the 3d. So yeah, new Norris is going to be easily the toughest conference based on play so far this year.

LA got shut out (they look terrible, despite all their preseason hype). San Jose losing after one period in Colorado 1-0.

For those with VERSUS, San Jose and Colorado is on. Great for me as two of my favorite non Blues are Joe Pavelski and Matt Duchene

Seems that pretty much the only thing going right for us tonight is Vancouver only picking up 1 point against the Jackets. SJ is currently leading the Avs while the Wild/Jets look like they're going to OT. Hoping the Jets and Avs can pull it out.

EDIT: nvm, 2-1 Winnipeg.

What an intense struggle that Wild-Jets game was. Bogosian smashed Bouchard into the end boards with 1 min left and he was bleeding profusely, skated off. Bogosian got the 5min major, but it was a bang-bang play and didn't feel like there was intent there.

Gotta root for the Wild tonight against the Hawks. No overtime, please.

By the way, the toughest conference for next season is the new Norris AINEC. Heading into tonight by percentage, the Blues are 7th overall and would be the 4th seed. Well-coached Dallas is 11th overall and would get screwed. Norris has 4 of the top 7, 5 of the top 11, 6 of the top 15 and 7 of the top 19. The new Norris' 7th team would be in the playoffs in the new Smythe, and battling for fourth one point behind the 4th place team in the eastern conferences. The 6th place team in the Norris would be in every other playoffs. It's not even close.

1. Philadelphia
2. Minnesota
3. NYR
4. Detroit
5. Boston
6. Chicago
7. St. Louis
8. Vancouver
9. Florida
10. Pittsburgh

27. NYI
28. Columbus
29. Anaheim
30. Carolina

1st off - Interesting Color Selection.

2nd - I am really not sold on the new setup. I think its pretty unfair that good team in a good conference has to beat out hard teams and a mediocre team can play an in an inferior conference and amass fewer points, yet make the playoffs and while a more deserving team doesn't.

They really just need to accept an alignment that's for scheduling purposes and let the league leaders get the playoff slots, especially since they're tweaking the crap out of playoff seeding now.

That was the closest option to pink for the terrible, terrible, new Smythe.

The Sharks were trailing 4-2 and then Hejda who is freaking terrible had a brutal giveaway to make it 4-3. Before I could get here to post that the Sharks were about to make yet another late-game comeback to get points they tied it. 4-4.

SATURDAY 12/17
Vancouver's in Toronto and leads 1-0 in the first minute.

Detroit seems back to their recent rout pattern, already up 2-0 on the Kings 2min into the game. Edit now 3-0.

Minnesota's hosting the Islanders, starts same time as Blues game.

Phoenix is kinda fringy on the West race but hosting NYR.

San Jose hosts Edmonton later.

Looking at the next couple of nights, Detroit's at Edmonton tomorrow and Chicago's at Pittsburgh Tuesday. Minnesota's at Vancouver then Calgary the next two nights.

PERCENTAGE STANDINGS THRU 12/18

1. Chicago .697
2. Philadelphia .694, 20ROW
3. Boston .694, 18ROW
4. Minnesota .682
5. NYR .667
6. Detroit .661
7. St. Louis .656
8. Florida .636
9. Vancouver .625
10. San Jose .617
11. Pittsburgh .606
12. Dallas .597
13. Nashville .594
14. New Jersey .578
15. Phoenix .547, 14ROW won in Buffalo
16. Buffalo .547, 14ROW
17. Toronto .547, 13ROW
18. Washington .532
19. Winnipeg .531
20. Ottawa .515
21. Los Angeles .500, 13ROW
22. Montreal .500, 12ROW
23. Calgary .485
24. Edmonton .484
25. Colorado .470
26. Tampa Bay .479
27. NYI .433
28. Carolina .382
29. Anaheim .359
30. Columbus .333

Looking a little ahead, after the road trip to Pittsburgh, Chicago gets 9 of the next 10 at home and mostly soft including Columbus twice and Edmonton, though two games against Detroit.

Detroit has a four game road trip – the Western Canada trip before Christmas, at Nashville the day after, then four of their next six are with the Blues and Hawks. 2d place in the Central this year is looking like it'll have a first playoff round (4 vs. 5) with either 3d place in the Central or 2d in the NW (Min/Van).

Be nice if RNH could get a hat trick and keep the Blues in 4th place tonight

Blues are 4th in percentage in the conference right now, would move up to 3d with a Detroit loss in regulation or OT.

Yeah but playoff standing wise we're fourth due. That's what I was referring to.

The 26th-31st stretch of December is going to be a key point in our season. We face Dallas, Nashville and Detroit x2. We have back to back games twice that week and face Detroit the second game, both times.

They were on pace for the 5th seed both before and after the Wings win tonight.

Minnesota lost again tonight, got drilled in Vancouver and lost their fourth straight (albeit two of those in SO). If they lose in regulation again tomorrow in Calgary, Blues pass them in percentage and the top three percentages in the West would be Chicago, Detroit and St. Louis in close succession. Blues would still be on track for the 5th seed.

We're hoping tomorrow Pittsburgh beats Chi in regulation, Calgary beats Minnesota in regulation, and on Wednesday Vancouver beats Detroit in regulation and the Blues beat Colorado before the shootout. If all those things happen:

1-seed Chicago .676
2-seed Vancouver .647
3-seed a Pacific team around .600
4-seed STL .667
5-seed DET .652
6-seed MIN .643

Pens up 2-0 over Chicago and Washington up 2-0 over the Preds, both in the 2nd period. So far, so good.

Washington takes out Nashville. Sweet. That was the most important game of the night for us, IMO.

Pittsburgh is trying really hard to blow a 3-0 third period lead. 3-2 now against the Hawks with about 9 minutes left.

Chicago goes down against Pittsburgh, and Calgary beats out Minnesota. Beautiful! Blues could take the Central by New Years. Not saying they will....just saying it's possible. Some very important games coming up...especially against Detroit.
