I like this deal, a lot.
After this season we are going to have Price, Subban and Emelin, among others, looking for significant pay increases.

The only way this contract doesn't hurt us is if they can guarantee Gomez will be gone.

The really bad Weber has 6 points on the PP....

As far as the salary, hey it's not a problem. We take everybody's bad contracts......How's Wade Redden doing?
I agree it's risky...I just understand WHY this made this trade.

As for the capspace issue...meh, capspace doesn't make you win games.

I don't know how I feel about this trade yet...Kaberle isn't that far removed from being a pretty effective dman, so it's not out of the question to imagine he COULD find his game again.

Settle down guys

Leafs fan coming in peace

I love Kaberle and I hope he turns his game around. People talk about the cap hit, well considering the small resource pool for descent moving puck defensemen, and considering your best player is out, I think this is a good fil in.

Depends on what your looking for. If your looking for the old Kaberle, it's not him. He hasn't been the same since Jenssen( lousy *******) hit.

However, He'll get you 20-25 points a year. He'll no longer be the lead guy, but more in supportive role.

Hey 2 years at 4.25M$ is not bad at all if he can log 23-25 mins a game, get us 30-35 points and help the PP.

The guy was a consistent 50-60pt D only 2-3 years ago. every player is allowed to have a bad year... hell a bad 25 games.

Give him a chance

Gauthier just bought low for high rewards.

Finish the phrase. We were laughing at the Bruins becuase of the price they paid FOR A D-MEN SO BAD. They won the cup despite of him.

Again, I would have created a poll with just the question....Do you want Kaberle? Even without mentioning for who and THE MAJORITY would have said no way. Because he's mediocre and because of the salary. 9 points total, 0 goals, 4 points on the PP while Carolina has had the most PP's of the league. And he's still bad defensively. What's not to like?

Again, the only thing to like? I guess he's better than Weber and St-Denis right? Problem is that St-Denis had no room to begin with. And the day Campoli and Markov arrive, there's no room for Weber either.

There's plenty to like if you think he can revert back to form. I don't think he's done as an NHLer. Let's give him a shot before writing him off...what exactly has Spacek done on the powerplay? They'll bury him or buy him out if he is atrocious.

Just when I thought the team couldn't get any softer.

I can't wait to see the PP now. The 1st unit will have a guy that can't hit the net with a guy that's too scared to shoot the puck. It's going to be delightful.

That's what I would try for a while.
I'm pretty sure Kaberle plays on the right side. In fact I browsed to some old Leafs GDT and they had him on the right side.

with all the signings needed to be made this summer here is my assesment?

1 - Markov is done for the year or maybe for good
2 - Gomez will be be buy out this summer or sent to hamilton next year
3 - If Kaberle doesn't work, he will be bought out this summer

If not, gill's money will have to be split between gorges subban and Price and it's for sure adios to Kostitsyn and Moen

Oh and with Kaberle now as well as Subban, Diaz and (crosses fingers) Markov back in a month its a matter of time before Weber is traded.

I don't mind this deal. Last season at this time we would have done laughed that we could actually pull this off. Less than one year removed isn't bad. He went from a 1st rounder+ to being traded for Spacek. It's a potential home run. We bought low. Give it a chance.

So when Campoli is ready to play who gets scratched? Diaz or Emelin? I think we all know the answer to that one..

My guess is Weber is done as a Hab with this move..

I guess we'll see how it turns out. I never wanted us to acquire Kaberle. Was laughing at him in Boston. Still see that he didn't turn it around in Carolina and then he's with us.....So I guess I have to love him. Today we're the joke. But sometimes, true that trades do not always end up as it started.

Let's hope so. But right now I don't like it. And it has nothing to do with losing Spacek either.

Hey there's some other good news......we didn't lose a 2nd rounder in the process...

Ok I am finallly breathing.

I will give this deal a chance. Again, the deal for me is great. It's fair. Since it's basically a tiny upgrade. But the cap is the issue.

Okay.. time to break. I will give it a chance.. for all we know he can probably do well and we all regret what we said here.

Man I hope 90% of people in here end up eating crow. I too am nervous about whether Kaberle can regain form but I'm not about to say this is a disaster because I know he has way more value at his best than Spacek at his best.

I'm cautiously optimistic, more like hopeful I guess. This could work out great, or be a real terrible move. I don't think there is much middle ground.

I'll let his play with us and on our atrocious PP decide instead of deciding now like most though. If he can help turn that around even a little (and I know he hasn't been doing it in Carolina, but a change of scenery could do it - as said he is not far removed from being a good player) that will help us a lot. Our PP has lost us too many points this year.

Just trying to inject some rationality in here, but yeah, I see the potential for this to be a **** trade, but I'll let time decide and hope for the best.

We picked up a mega-soft, offensive d-man to go with our crop of other soft, offensive d-men, so they could make passes to our soft, speedy, offensive forwards all while playing in a mega-defensive system based on trying to grind out 1 goal wins.

People are going to complain because of his contract and decline, but the guy is 4 years younger than Spacek, plus his contract is not a 35+ so if he sucks too bad you can send him to the KHL.

That being said he had his best games of the year this week...4 points and +2 so he was on his way to turning it around.

Ask yourself, 12 months ago if we could have traded Spacek for Kaberle straight up, most of you would have petitionned the city for a statue of Gauthier.

In terms of decline, at this time last year he was in Toronto on a crappy team and had 3-35-38(22 PP points) and -2 in 58 games, that is a pace for 54 points over a full season which would have put him 4th in the NHL in points(he finished 13th with 9pts in 29 games in Boston).

The big question is will he fit in well here and play like a #2 d-man(which would make the deal a huge steal) or like a #4-5(at which point the 2 years left become a burden).
