Just heard this and it's scary.

A teenager died a couple weeks ago after taking a shot to the throat in a midget game

wow that sounds scary. Just wondering what systems in the body does this type of injury effect that causes it to be so severe?

Wiercioch was taken to the hospital but is in stable condition and his teammates in Binghamton were told that he should be okay.

The 21-year-old defenceman will require further evaluation to see if swelling in the area occurs, and more on the extent of the injury will be known Saturday

Man I feel sad to hear that. I love the game probably just as much as I love my wife and kids, and to hear that someone died playing the game truly breaks my heart.
You know that knee's and wrist's can be rehabilitated but for that poor teenager and especially his family to lose his life playing the game is truly upsetting. I am a big fan of the physicality of hockey, but life threatening injuries always get to me. My thoughts and prayers are with the family of that teenager.

I heard last night on TSN what happened to Patrick Wiercioch and hope he's okay. The Rumour about the Breathing Tube is scary to think about. You never want to hear about injuries like these. My thoughts are with Patrick Wiercioch.

As long as he survives to live a non crippled life, I'm very happy.

That's freaking scary. Recently, a 17 year old here in Edmonton was killed when he took a puck to the neck. The puck broke his neck and crushed an artery.

Get well Patty!

For an injury like a blow to the neck, I wonder why they didnt keep Wiercioch still and stretcher him out until they had a chance to have him checked.

Coach Kurt Kleinendorst said Patrick Wiercioch is still under evaluation, but "moving in the right direction." #BSens hoping for the best.

It was probably something that got worse with time. And so, his breathing probably just got steadily worse. (I've seen this happen to kids once in a blue moon at work). Breathing tube isn't a big issue, as long as the actual trachea is intact --- if its just bruised/swollen, it should get better with no issues.

I was thinking more of a fracture to the bone in his neck.

Usually with neck and back injuries they will put a board under their neck or strap them in so nothing is dislodged.

It just seemed strange to see the pictures of him skating off after a severe neck injury all hooped over with his head hanging down.

Well it did hit him in the front of the neck (all bones are in the back), so more likely that it was more swelling and bruising than anything. If it was his neck, I would think he would be taken off on a stretcher (so if the puck hit the back of his neck).
