He did, but the injury happened when he was a Hab and took a Chris Therien slapshot to the larynx. It ended his career.

Hope Patty Dub can make a speedy recovery. Just scary stuff.

Very bad timing for Wiercioch. We had 4 right-handed defenseman against Vancouver, plus Alfie on the point on the PP. We need a left-handed shot on the PP point and he may have seen some action this week.

Glad he's OK.

i remember that mccleary incident. it was very, very scary. i remember the habs doctor at the time saying that he was very close to death, and if they hadn't have done some great things at the hospital he would have been done.

Patrick Wiercioch update by KK................

PSBJoyOnTheSens Joy Lindsay
Coach Kleinendorst said Patrick Wiercioch is "recovering" in Syracuse. No time frame for how long that recovery will take.

Sly St Laurent says that Murray said he expects him to make a full recovery. Still no details though.

I heard an unsubstantiated rumor that he had to have a tracheotomy at the arena before going to the hospital. Again, i'm not sure if this is true or not.

I wouldn't be shocked.

If his airway closed, he would have needed one (or the outcome would have been tragic). Its not really a big deal though, saves a guys life -- and there is no issue with healing (actually heals VERY quickly).

I might be mixing up medical terms here, but say he wanted to smoke a cigarette, would he have to do so through the hole in his neck?

You could do that. But that myth is really not true. They have a piece that sits in the hole in your neck. And you breath through the piece holding your throat open.

Its an absolutely disgusting thing. But completely reversible. I see kids with tracheotomies pretty frequently. Know more than I want to know about them.

Ok, and is that what they're gonna do to Patty?

The Senators are being understandably tight-lipped about Patrick Wiercioch's injuries (the defenceman was hit in the neck by a puck in an AHL game last Friday). When we do find out more, sounds like we're going to learn that Binghamton trainer Glen Kinney is a real hero in this story. Patrick, we hope you make a full recovery.

I know no one knows the extent or recovery time, BUT IF it was simply bruising and swelling, should it not go down within a matter of a couple days? I've had bad swelling in various places on my body from various incidents and it never really takes more then 2 days with antiinflamatories/icing/and massaging....so IF it is just swelling, should he not be ready to go by the weekend? Best case scenario shouldn't he be ready to go any time now?

I think that after a trauma to the neck/throat, all the time needed, and more, will be taken. I would be surprised if he is back before the new year, very surprised.

That is the last thing on my mind now though, I hope he takes all the time in the world after an incident like that.

Right now, I'm just assuming that Wiercioch is out for the season. No need to be haste in rushing back from a serious injury such as that.

The issue will be if the swelling gets worse with exercise. If the area flares up with exercise then recovery will be longer.

As for him, glad he's home and doing well! Definitely glad there is no permenent injury to his trachea (if there was, he'd still be in hospital).

Honestly, from personal opinion, I doubt he misses the full year. I say 1-2 months.

When and if he does come back he'd probably wish to have steel ring around his neck.

Nothing released would lead me to believe it was simple swelling, especially after what Elliott had to say. There isn't going to be a set recovery time period regardless, not to mention the mental aspects of returning from an injury like that.

Talking about him playing this weekend seems really, really senseless.
