Winnipeg Becoming a Tough Out

http://insider.espn.go.com/nhl/blog?...contenders-nhl

Don Maloney realizes that the Winnipeg Jets' fans may have been a little extra fired-up to face his team based on the history. Still, the Phoenix Coyotes' GM came away so impressed with what he saw in Winnipeg last week that he thinks the MTS Centre has already become the toughest building for opposing teams to visit.

I don't know if this article from yesterday's globe and mail has been posted in another thread but the noise factor at the Hanger is really starting to get noticed around the league. I was at the Boston game and the crowd after Little's game winner was deafning.

I wouldn't bother either... Telling them about a sold out rink is like someone telling you about having 1 billion dollars; 1 billion or 10 billion, its inconceivable.

Speaking of this part of the Globe & Mail article:

Quote:
They boo stars like Alexander Ovechkin. They boo tough guys like Chris Pronger, nice guys like Shane Doan and even relatively unknowns like Johan Hedberg. If Santa Claus ever played against the Winnipeg Jets, they’d probably boo him too.
the Smooch Cam winners got booed tonight cuz they clearly were not the best kiss of the night. As one guy in my row put it, "They were probably just closest to the ice cream stand (since ice cream is the prize for best kissers)."

The crowd was nuts after the 4-0 goal. Most energetic I've heard the place since the home opener... I've only been to 4 regular season games so far... home opener, vs FLA on Nov 10, Saturday vs NJ and tonight.

The Jets ARE a playoff team. Period.

The Thrashers of November and early Dec last year were a playoff team prior to collapse. I believe playing in the empty barn in Atlanta cost that team between 10 and 12 points in the standings. Suppose home ice is now an advantage of about 10 or so points, that's a net 20 point swing. Add in the improvements as the young core has another year of experience and that's more than enough, though I think you have to subtract out some points from early this year as the players needed some time to adjust to the move, particularly Kane.

Note - this is the opinion of a former Thrashers season ticket holder who at the time, commented in the Thrashers' HF Board on 'empty building syndrome' as a cause of many home ice defeats for the previous two seasons. The core of the team is better than last year's record showed.

maintaining a 4-7-4 record on the road will not get us into the playoffs is all i am saying.

That's a nice statement, but in reality at this point they're not...
They're close and if they keep up their level of play they will be, but lets not get a head of ourselves.

I've always believed that "you are what your record says you are".

And our record says we are one point out of the playoffs.

Boston was last in the East after 10 games and now they're in 1st.. They weren't what their record says were. Or did you mean literally? As in, "We are in 9th because we are in 9th"?

Don't forget Atlanta was really hot the first half...then halted the second half last year

guys, anything can happen, the season is long. I agree with those who are saying "wait and see"

its too soon to start a victory dance. Hell, just a month ago people were bashing the Jets

Points can change. Anything can happen. We're still a ways away from the playoffs.

Actually, I was saying they would make the playoffs then too.
