They need to sit him for a few games to see if there are any side effects. I think they'll rush him back and do more damage. Without Bryz, Pronger and Giroux, this will be a real test.

No. You don't just randomly sit him.
If he has no symptoms and you do an MRI and you see nothing, then you let the kid play the next game. Doing anything further would be stupid.

Agreed. But I wouldn't make the MRI conditional upon him vocalizing symptoms. He seems like the kind of player itching to get back in the game. Send him to an outside Dr. now--if the tests come back clean, he goes back in the line-up.
Sit him out one game even if he seems fine and tests are negative. What's the harm? Probably unnecessary but I'd rather be have him miss one game being overly cautious than 20 because he is really hurt. If this was a knee, shoulder, groin, whatever injury I'd be all for him playing, but with a head injury it seems like you just never know. Guys say they are fine and docs agree, then the next thing you know they are out a month.
I'm usually adamant about guys sucking it up and playing through injuries, but with all the recent concussions around the league I'm beginning to back track a little. I don't think they need to change the rules of the game or anything drastic like that, but I think a good rule would be kind of like in the NFL where if you have concussion symptoms you can't play the rest of the game and maybe take it a step further and require players to sit out the next game as a precautionary measure. Maybe that's too cautious but I wouldn't be opposed to that.
They should be doing the IMPACT test, or whatever it is called. I don't give a damn if he hasn't had a symptom. If he has a concussion, and gets hit again while it's not healed, you could lose him for a year.
Flyers center Claude Giroux, the NHL’s leading scorer, "felt better this morning," GM Paul Holmgren said.
Giroux, who suffered a head injury on Saturday, will be evaluated again on Monday morning.
Holmgren also said goalie Ilya Bryzgalov was doing much better and should be able to play Tuesday in Washington.
Rookie Erik Gustafsson, recovering from wrist surgery, is also making strides, Holmgren said. The defenseman will start skating this week and may be ready to play in 10-14 days, according to Holmgren.
Giroux, who will turn 24 next month, was injured late in the second period of Saturday’s 5-2 win over visiting Tampa Bay, getting inadvertently kneed in the back of the head by teammate Wayne Simmonds.
"He was in front of me and I tried to jump over him and I don't know where I caught him," Simmonds said.
General manager Paul Holmgren said that Giroux "felt better" today after being kneed in the head by Wayne Simmonds during a freak second period play on Saturday. The Flyers are watching for a concussion there.
Giroux will be re-evaluated on Monday.
Bryzgalov incurred what appeared to be a right thigh injury and was doing "much better" and is expected to be available for Tuesday's game in Washington.
Lastly, Erik Gustafsson, recovering from a broken wrist, will be begin rehab this week and skating. He is still about two weeks away from playing. The Flyers desperately need to get Gustafsson back as they have no defensive depth right now with Chris Pronger out indefinitely with an apparent eye concussion.
Pronger will be re-evaluated Monday in Pittsburgh by concussion specialist Joseph Maroon.

It's dumb because concussions show up on MRIs.
The problems come when someone gets hit, feels woosey but tells their coach and trainer that they are fine and they want to go back in and so they go back in and then don't have an MRI after the game. And then they get hit next game and it's a problem.
That won't happen here w/ Giroux. He's going to have an MRI... probably a CT scan too. If they are clear and he has no symptoms, then you do nothing. You let him play on Tuesday, no questions asked.
He's also going to have baseline tests, impact tests, etc.
If he passes all those, then there's no danger in letting him play. That's the way they do it in the NFL now.
Concussions aren't some mysterious thing. If you have no symptoms and you never had any symptoms and you pass all the tests and all the scans come out normal, then you're fine.

Concussions in my sport carry a 3 week injury period. Sitting him for one game does absolutely nothing but piss the player off. If he's hurt he will sit himself, look around the league. Do you really think Giroux is going to take chances like that.
It didn't even look like he suffered one. He got up pretty much straight away, rubbed his neck for a bit, sat on the bench until 40 seconds left in the period then walked by himself back to the dressing room. He's probably just sore.
I PRAY Giroux is fine. He's one of my favorites and I just signed him this year in my keeper pool to a 5 year contract! I think Giroux has the potential to finish in the top 4-8 in scoring throughout that time. I'd just hate to see another good player go down. Best wishes to The Flyers on Giroux coming from one Habs fan.

Sources close to Giroux confirm to me that he is fine. Was internal discussion on letting him play 3rd period, but PHI chose to be cautious.

That is good news but you still have to be careful. I was jumped by two guys and got stomped in the head and it was not for a couple of weeks later when I got a massive headache. I went to my family doc and he said I had a concussion. Go figure. So you really never know. And this was in 1972.

i hope so. it was dis heartening when he told me. i'm on th fence about his realiability and almost didn't post it, kinda wish i hadn't. i don't want to be that guy who post usubstanciated rumors. sorry everybody!

Meh, I still think it wouldn't do any harm to sit him a game. I'm not saying put him on IR or anything, but the Flyers and Giroux will be fine if he doesn't play in the next game. He may be fine if he plays too, but there is certainly no danger in sitting him one game. I wasn't really saying sit him for one game to let him recover, obviously that would do nothing. I was saying they should sit him one game to be completely sure it is not a concussion and no new symptoms show up. I know they can do tests and so forth, but it wouldn't hurt to keep him out.
