Important to note, Filatov is being "assigned" by OTT so Sens retain all contractual rights to the player. He's still under contract to them

Best move for the moment. If the team dont have a spot for him, no reason to waste his time in NA. IMHO KHL is more competitive league than AHL. So nothing wrong to work on his game there. And now i have a reason to watch some KHL games with purpose.
Go CSKA !

Meh. It was a gamble, but I'm glad we did it.

I know what your saying, but at the end of the day even if he never pans, we only burned a 3rd on him and he's not sulking and poisoning the the locker room while he's in the KHL.

If Ottawa still owns his NHL rights, let him go back to Sweden, er a, Russia...

This is basically like Silfverberg...

He was assigned by the Sens, so Filatov is still under contract and his rights owned by the Sens.

Don't disagree with this - that it was worth the gamble.

Don't care about the player anymore so I won't wish him luck but I do hope for the best for your organ-eye-zation.

No, the Sens own his rights and can qualify him when his contract expires if they wish to do so.

It is to bad that it did not work out for him. I can't 100% say that he got a full shake at holding on to his spot but that is the breaks for a young player who hasn't full made it yet. One of these times he is going to put it all together, might not be in the NHL when he does it though.

Anyone who didn't see this coming, well... you should have seen this coming. The writing was on the wall for a while now.

This is the best move. Let the kid mature as a player and person in Russia. The AHL is probably the best place for him but like I have said, who is dumb enough to take 65K vs 1 mil or more tax free?

The Sens retain his rights, Filatov gets to play, and even if he doesn't come back it was still a good risk by the Sens. He won't be back for 2 or 3 years if at all though. This does indeed prove though that a Russian is a flight risk no matter what... they will bolt for more money over development for the most part and who can really blame them? It's a ton of money.

Wow, did anyone see this coming? Its almost like a stereotype. Nikita joins a long line of his fellow comrades we've had terrible "luck" with, similar style, similar desire, similar result. Not that there's anything wrong with that i guess.

I guess if we are loaning him to Russia then we keep his rights, but i thought once he played a game there, he is ineligible to return this year, or am i confusing that with something else.

And even if we have his rights this year, his contract was expiring, so I guess we'd have to make him a qualifying offer to keep his rights another year or two. Maybe we'll get really lucky and someone will sign him to an offer sheet.

But it seems clear to me - it's Filatov that doesnt think he can make it in the NHL. If he believed he could, he would wait for his chance like every other player and earn it. But he knows he cant.

Or i guess its just possible he's pouting, feeling superior and snooty and not seeing why he should have to earn it.

But to say he never got a chance .. maybe fans will say that, but niki will never be able to say it amd then return to a Sens camp without getting a beating.

We barely tolerate Spezza playing that game, Filatov will have to show a heckuva lot more than the nothing he showed to get that kind of opportunity here.

He could come back in the future if he gets his game together and if not we only lost a 3rd rd pick.

It was a no risk high reward gamble... can't be upset if it does not work out because it cost like nothing to take the risk,
Agreed. Filatov to the KHL isn't necessarily the end. Hudler for example bailed on the Wings and is already back.

Edit - Pretty much agree with Billy Madison on this.

Anyways, hopefully this puts to rest what a lot of people were saying... he has NHL assets but he isn't an NHL player. The right place for him to develop was the AHL but what a Russian can make in Russia vs NA (not in the NHL) is a joke. It's going to hurt Russian hockey in the long run and their programs in general.

I don't think the Sens ever take a chance on a Russian prospect again. They will take a Russian NHLer for sure, not a prospect though.

Especially with a draft like this, I don't necessarily think that's the case.

Yeah... people make mistakes. I was thinking Euro player, Fillipula's name rang Detroit, then I realized it was Hudler... who jumped the pond for money.

Nope, he's an RFA.

If he comes back to camp next year, I dont think this is too bad of a thing. Kleinendorst said himself... Filatov is too good for that level... and he also said its an awful environment for young players. This might just be the very small optimist in me coming out of the woodwork, but theres a good chance that this is the best developmental path for him.

I don't blame him for leaving, but I also think that Murray letting him go says a lot about this. I think he realizes Binghamton isn't the best place for him to be, but that Ottawa certainly isn't either.

Yakupov is an NHL tallent right now. He's barely a prospect. That said, I can't imagine what would happen to him to any team that doesn't think he is NHL ready and they want him to go to the AHL...

Guys like Filatov make it hard on other Russian's that are not a sure thing. Oh well, 3rd round pick looks pretty good for Columbus now... meant nothing to Ottawa though.
