Should Sens avoid Russian Prospects altogether?

I still have faith in Filly coming back eventually. That being said, do you think the sens should make it a general rule to avoid Russian prospects as much as possible (if they haven't already)?

This thread again? Didn't we have it when Filatov was SPECULATED to be going back, too?

My answer hasn't changed. You can't fairly judge an entire nationality based on a few bad apples. Judge on a case-by-case basis, though I'd argue that selecting Russians in the later rounds has almost never worked since scouts started regularly going to Russia.

Well if Columbus had handled his development properly he'd be in the NHL and a Blue Jacket. The kids a reclamation project, and frankly the AHL is where he should be, but he's still young and can make more money and be closer to home in the KHL. We aren't avoiding Swedish prospects because Silfverburg wanted to play at home. All we can hope for is that management clearly outlined what he needs to work on and he improves his play and can contribute next year.

I would probably avoid later round Russians, sure some may pan out but there is more risk there than any other prospect due to the KHL factor.

Top 10 in the 1st round, especially if they've played in the CHL in there draft year or beyond are fair game IMO. Not only have they had experience with the NA game, but it shows there willing to do what it takes to make the NHL.

Like it's been said.. avoiding talented players because they are Russian is silly and should not be solely based on nationality.. if Filatov or someone like him was Swedish or Finnish wanted to go back to his homeland to grow before making the jump to the NHL their would be no discussions about it.. but since he is Russian its all over the media.

Case-by-case basis. Treat players as individuals, not as generalizations.

I've been hurt too many times now. The flirtation is always there, but in the end I just cannot trust you Russia. I have been seeing other countries. Latvia and Denmark. Nothing long term yet. They offer me something you never could. Their hearts.

I will be deleting you from Facebook.

Good bye Russia.

I think most GMs have already determined that Russian players are too much of a risk to waste a pick on. Outside of the first round you just don't see any Russians being drafted. My guess is that they look at each Russian player on a player by player basis in the 1st rd & decide. Great Russian players like Yakopov will go quite high likely 1st overall & others might slide a little or a lot, again though only talking about the 1st rd. GMs seem to have determined that if they are not 1st rd or even more likely top 10 picks than they are not worth the hassel.

All prospects are gambles, but all Russian prospects are two gambles. Getting a Russian prospect to pan out is like winning at Roulette, and then having to flip a coin to see if you've won anything.

I would take a Russian if they were substantially better than the next best player, but outside of the top 5, there's never going to be a point where I can definitively say that one prospect is going to be better than another. Inside the top 5, I don't think I'd have the stomach to risk a gamble, even if really small.

All this being said. I would take the money in the KHL too. I'm surprised non-Russians don't go to the KHL to develop, and then come back to NA after a big club takes notice.

Who cares if they come from Canada, or Russia, or Slovakia, or Zimbabwe. As long as they can play

Case by case basis. If we brought Volchenkov back I don't think anyone would be complaining, I don't see why any other Russian should be different as long as they work hard every night and play well consistently.

It's not racist. Russian players are faced with a fairly unique choice to play for a lot more money in the KHL, rather than crossing their fingers and waiting it out in the AHL. If I was in their position, I would probably do it too. Our team's been burnt like 10 times on this. What the hell is racist about not wanting to take the risk?

Pierre even was suggesting that there are GM's in the league that have reservations about Russian players, such that this could indeed be a year where some top draft picks are in play for trades, something we havent seen for awhile.

Most of these guys get pissed off and leave because they don't appreciate making $40-60 grand in the minors while they could make 5+ times that in the KHL.

I mean sure, if the kid played in the CHL then w/e, but don't pick a Russian in the top 10, bounce him between the 4th line and the AHL for 3 seasons and expect him not to go to Russia where they'll pay him more and he'll get 4 times the ice time.

To be fair a lot of people always say Malkin doesn't give his 100% every night because if he did he would be the best player in the world and there wouln't be anyone close. Pens fans often say that Malkin can single handedly win hockey games but he chooses not to do it or is too lazy to do it.

The only way I'd personally draft a Russian is if he was a surefire NHL player who could play the following season, or a Russian player that came over to play his junior years in the CHL.

Even then it's a bit risky as we seen how far Kabanov's stock dropped when his issues got out...although he's still playing in the Q so he hasn't bailed out on the Islanders yet.
