Not a big fan of Sutter. Him and his brother Brent are both overrated as coaches. Plus he's brutal to look at and listen to in interviews haha.

He gets a huge effort out of his players. He's most known for that mean tough defensive style sure, but if you look at his past teams, he's had nowhere close to the talent he would have to work with in LA. I think you would see a crazy mesh of system and talent, and it would make you guys much much harder to play.
I long for the days when Calgary's forecheck was unbeatable, when every player was crushing people behind the net, when teams couldn't get the puck out of their own damn zone because we were all over them. That was Daryl Sutter's in your face smash mouth brand of Hockey. If true I think we'll see a pick up season in LA.
The Kings' forecheck has been flat out awful for most of the season, so hopefully he can get them to figure it out.

This is what I'm excited about. Mainly because most of the work has been done for Sutter in molding the players to fit his style. He seems to be a coach that emphasizes strength up the middle Kopitar, Richards, Stoll (as best he can), and Fraser all play two-way games. Greene, Doughty, Johnson, even Mitchell and to some extent Scuderi like to play the body. Brown hits, Gagne plays defense sometimes (maybe full time now), and guys like Richardson and Lewis could be hellish with an organized aggressive forecheck. Admittedly Penner is the only player on the roster who doesn't play defensively or physical but he's got the frame to do so if motivated. Williams might also have some trouble fitting in. Then again, who knows if Sutter's coaching has changed since his time in Calgary.

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. I wanted young, hungry and fiery, I got 2 out of 3. This team needed a drill instructor behind the bench, they got it.

Those are my exact sentiments. A fresh new face and voice is preferred, but if he can ignite a fire in the locker room and injects a pulse on this team, then I think he is a smart hire. This is clearly Lombardi's last ditch effort. If Sutter doesn't work, he's gone.

Sutter also helps tend to the family farm in Alberta and might need some time to get his personal affairs in order.
I'm sure we can arrange couple of Kings scratches to work on that farm.

As for fear of Sutter's relationship with the players - correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Sutter just a tough, very demanding and straightforward (when it comes to evaluating player's performance) coach? As far as I know he is not in same boat with Carlyle and Crawford, who can be just rude and disrespectful too often?

If so, I don't see any problems with the players. I think you are giving too little credit when it comes to players' determination. At this point I think they will be glad to hear any kind of criticism and new ideas how to reach their potential and start winning.

Not sure if want.

But if he shows up behind the bench wearing a hood and carrying a scythe while he hovers over problem players, I'll smile.

Same defense first system doesn't bother me. I just want us to win and to play with fire! Honestly this is a pretty good hire..

Quisp makes a really good point here on why Sutter (presumably) was chosen:

I'm not too sure why we fire Murray to replace him with Sutter.

The team needs fresh air and adapting to the new NHL.
Something creative to make oponents defender out of position
Not sure where Sutter is fitting in here.

Really wanted to see a fresh face behind the bench, instead its rehash city. I'm starting to think Lombardi's not as with it as I thought he once was....

Here's a bit of number crunching on Sutter, rankings by the season (I didn't include 2002-2003 since it was split between San Jose and Calgary):

Chicago
92-93: 19th offense, 1st defense (24 teams)
93-94: 18th offense, 5th defense (26 teams)
94-95: 6th offense, 1st defense
San Jose
97-98: 18th offense, 14th defense
98-99: 21st offense, 5th defense (27 teams)
99-00: 16th offense, 11th defense (28 teams)
00-01: 17th offense, T-3rd defense (30 teams)
01-02: 4th offense, 6th defense

Calgary
03-04: 19th offense, 2nd defense
05-06: 28th offense, 1st defense

Just going by the numbers, DS seems even stronger defensively than TM, but I wager his offensive game isn't going to produce much more. On the surface this looks a lot like more of the same, just a bit more angry and loud, as we had with TM, but I'll give the veteran bench boss his due and afford him a chance to prove he can do the job.

Still think DL needs to learn to step out of his panic room more often and do something a bit risky. Maybe not so much this time, as I can understand wanting to go with a vet when your job is on the line, but overall he needs to learn to lossen up.

agreed 100%

offense and defense is not the problem. Its our players. Our leaders on the ice, our veteran players, and drew doughty.

Why would he try something risky though? I mean in all seriousness, right or wrong and he will be proven by the end of the year to be either, he simply does not think the system, and the philosophy was the problem, he believes it's on the players, and that they are/were the problem.

So, having believed that, and having to make a change, he brings in a guy who can teach the same system that they believe in, but be a bit more louder, and more in your face, someone that is less of a teacher, more of a disclipinarian of sorts.

Either way, end of the year he is going to be proven right that it was the players as the Kings go deep into the playoffs, or wrong, as the Kings are either bounced or don't make it...

Which is pretty much what everyone wants at this point, to find out if DL is right or wrong.

Very disappointed, but not surprised.

Who is going to be the Kings next GM? Lombardi just put his job on the back of Sutter.

Emailed Leiweke and got a response within an hour. That's pretty impressive imo.

He says it is Dean's choice to make, and that we need someone emotional and driven. He too is mad and passionate about the team

Aside from Doughty's performances this season (and last), I still think Dustin Brown is not captain material.

Really this is win/win. Either Sutter turns the team around and they actually win a playoff series for once, or he doesn't and we get a new GM and coach.

Interesting article from the Hockey News on why the Kings shouldn't hire Sutter. One thing that stood out....

Perhaps before the Kings give Sutter his first NHL coaching job in five years, they should consider he has coached three teams during his NHL tenure for a total of nine full seasons and two partial ones. In those nine full seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks, Sharks and Calgary Flames, his teams finished in the top half of the league in NHL scoring exactly once, when his Sharks finished fourth in the league in goals scored in 2001-02. In the other eight seasons, his team finished an average of 20th in offensive production. (That includes one season when the league was comprised of just 24 teams, two when it was 26th, one when it was 27 and one when it was 28.)

http://www.thehockeynews.com/article...yckrQ.facebook

Author points out the obvious-

What we cannot understand is the name that is floating around as Murrayís replacement. Letís get this straight. The Kings fired Murray ostensibly because they arenít nearly creative enough given their personnel and canít score goals and their answer to that problem is to possibly hire Darryl Sutter?

If so many others can see this, why can't DL????Or does he like the idea of digging his own grave???
