Whaaa???

I like Miettinen. He's a slick guy, solid both ways. At the very least, he's better than JJ, and gives us another solid LW.

I didn't watch him in Minny, but he was pretty good on a line with Jussi Jokinen and Niklas Hagman in Dallas.

If nothing else, we're finally building a decent 3rd line. GST is better suited as a 4th line anyways IMO.

He's good if you temper your expectations of Miettinen to a player who can play solid two-way hockey and has an inaccurate shot. But for the money, you can't do much better.

Tampa Bay's offer was 2 years, 3 million. So now we've got him for that contract.

I wouldn't have really guessed we'd make the claim, but, I can't complain. He'll fit somewhere within our top 9 (likely bottom 6) and hopefully balance things out.

Good two-way guy, I'm okay with this. He's always put up pretty decent numbers, so if he can fit in here and put up 15 goals, 30-45 points, I like it.

Also, if Steve Yzerman felt he'd be a good addition for 2 years under Guy Boucher in Tampa, I feel we got a quality player here who can help round out our depth in the bottom 6.

I have a little bit of optimism regarding this move.

Wild fans were not all that happy with Mittens last year, but his role on the Wild was to be on one of the top lines with Koivu.

Many Wild fans said that he is a very good pk'er, good skater, etc, just not a great finisher.

To me he should be an upgrade on Jaffray. He's not an all-star, but he might be able to make that line playable at least.

Could be interesting. We all know we had a hole in that spot. Jaffray is not cutting it. If Mittens can be an improvement, it's great because we didn't need to lose 1 asset to get him. If not, we can let him go. Win / Win for us.

Actually I'm not sure we can.

He has an NMC, meaning he might be waiver exempt.

In any case, it's only a two year (really, 1.5 year) contract.

No you cant. The contract is 2 years, 1.5M per plus a 500K signing bonus and a NMC.

Which means he doesnt go anywhere unless he wants to go somewhere.

Yeah, that's an important disclaimer to give for Miettinen. He is not a good finisher at all. But I love what he brings from a defensive standpoint, and he'll be a real asset on the PK.

And again, Jets didn't have to give anything up for him.

TB knew full well he had to clear waivers. Same as Nabokov last year, when the Red Wings tried to sign him. I just hope he doesn't pull a Nabby and refuse to report.

+1

Not a fan of the Jets pulling a "Nabakov" on this one. Waivers for this type of thing is silly anyway.

I don't think it's a big deal. I'm sure these players want to play first and foremost, regardless of what team it's with.

It's not like this is a Nabokov-type situation, where he signed with a contender (Detroit) only to be claimed by a bottom-feeder (Isles) and was therefore upset. Winnipeg is actually ahead of TB in the standings.

Still doesnt make it any less of a dick move.

Really no point in this at all.. Miettinen doesn't resemble anything the Jets need.

I love how apparently we've "got one of the league’s weakest bottom-six forward groups"

While I agree waivers for this sort of thing isn't to my liking, rules are rules and we are playin' by them.

May be viewed as a bit of a smug move by some, and I can see that side of the coin most definitely. But, with that being said, I like that our management are willing to do it. I think our management is viewed by many as a group of "nice guys", but I love the fact they viewed Miettinen as a player that could help us and therefore did what it took to add him to our roster, whether it pissed off some people or not (as I am sure the Yzerman and the Lightning aren't very happy).

Hope he plays tonight!

I don't really know much about Miettinen, but if he takes Jaffrays spot in the line up, then GREAT!

Well... The games we played with a line with Jaffray-The Stalper-Klingberg, it doesn't exactly scream top line in the league. Replace them with Miettinen-Burmi-Fehr and it looks a whole lot better.

No kidding. Our 'weakest bottom six' have kept us in some pretty darn tight games. Just another talking head blowing steam and not really knowing what he's talking about.
