Saw this over on DBD and got to thinking about Jordan Staal. If he happens to be on the table, does anyone think the Stars should go after him? Pens fans seem to have differing opinions on his potential to be a top center. When talking about him people always mention that he's been playing in a third line role, but last year he had ample time on their second line due to Crosby being hurt and didn't put up as many points as their fans would have liked (50 in 62 games...what a dud).
I know there's a risk because he's a UFA after this season, but if somehow an extension could be agreed upon would anyone be for this? I think we could put together a suitable package to get him. If we were able to snag one of the bigger FA wingers and had Staal as well, we'd be looking at two very dangerous top lines.
I would imagine it would have to be a roster player, a top prospect, and a high pick or two. I think that would be worth it personally, contingent upon an extension.
There would be a ton of interest driving the price up, the team doesn't have the assets to spare, and he is only signed for 1 year. Wait until he is UFA and make the pitch then.

Problem is that Pittsburgh doesn't really NEED anything right now. They have a stellar forward corps, a good defensive corps, and a young goalie. The problem would be if Staal wants to move on and get a bigger role/more money. I feel we could offer that to him here in Dallas, but we don't have the chips to trade, because Pittsburgh doesn't want any chips.
Yeah they're a great team but they're not perfect as we saw in round 1. GM's are always looking to improve. Now you're probably right that we're not the team that can help them in that regard, at least immediately. I just really like the player. I just can't imagine them letting him walk for nothing after this season. And there's no way to know but I would think he wants a bigger role at some point in his career. Doesn't look that will ever happen there for an extended time.
It probably is best to hold off and try and sign him as a UFA but I don't think he'd consider coming here without trying it out for a while. Just a gut feeling.
We wouldn't trade what it would cost to get him and I don't like the fact that he's only got one year left and has never really played extensively in the role for which he'd be brought here. IE second line center. Thank you, no.
If the actual price is anything like what Pens' fans are demanding, I'll just wait 'til he's a UFA. He's a 2nd line center, not a superstar like some of them seem to think.

Ribs is better offensively, while Staal is better defensively and younger, but they both only have 1 year left before they are UFAs. Both have had a couple flukey injuries over the past couple seasons.

They are both in the final year of their contracts and both will be UFAs. I agree that Staal plays against tougher compitetion and is better defensively, but Ribeiro generates more offense. Their value shouldn't be too far apart considering you are only guaranteed 1 more year of either.

Staal is 24 and a Selke trophy finalist. Riberio is no where close to his value.

I expect Staal makes a team better immediately than Ribeiro does, and having a year to sell the player on the benefits of playing for a franchise would yield more in the future in Staal's case.

Mitigated? Maybe a tiny bit. Their ages are still a much bigger deal than when they'll be UFAs. The idea behind acquiring Staal would be to then sign him to a lengthy extention and retain the player. That might not be the plan even if you wanted to acquire Ribeiro, you might just be gearing up to go all-in next season and ice the strongest possible team with a borderline 1st line center on your 2nd line.

I'm not going to get into the mitigated value debate other than to say the price for Staal is not worth it and I don't even think Pittsburgh at this point knows what they want to do with him. There are still huge question marks about Crosby and whether he'll sign a contract extension so moving Staal before you know for certain what happens with Crosby seems awfully risky. I just don't see it in the cards for Dallas.

But if he isn't traded with an extension, it doesn't really matter that he's 24 because he can walk at the end of the season. They are asking for more than any rental has ever gotten ever. And it's not like he has proven to be anything but a shutdown 2nd/3rd line center that can put up 50-60 points.
