The 2012 draft has been much hyped and much lauded for at least a couple seasons. Notably with highly touted Russians Nail Yakupov and Mikhail Grigorenko, as well as American/Russian dual citizen Alex Galchenyuk. Since then things have changed, Swedish star forward Filip Forsberg has made his presence in the top 5 known, making himself a highly likely candidate to be drafted early. Of course injuries have taken their toll on some of these highly touted prospects, with Galchenyuk and Frk both missing significant time due to injury this season.

So, without further delay, here's what we're looking at for the ISS top 30:

ISS & Central Scouting Release 2012 Rankings
Posted by Guy Flaming
~
The evolution of the Class of 2012 continues to take shape this week as both International Scouting Services and NHL Central Scouting have released their updated rankings. ISS head scout Ross MacLean will be back on The Pipeline Show this Saturday for our regular bi-weekly "ISS Draft Countdown" segment and you can be sure we'll be discussing their new #1 ranked player.

The ISS top 30 is an amalgamation of all eligible prospects while Central Scouting chooses to separate the leagues for their November release and they give a top 25 from each.

We speak with a 2012 draft eligible player on every edition of TPS, links to those interviews for the players we've already chatted with can be found below.

Here is the ISS top 30:
1. MIKHAIL GRIGORENKO (RW) 6'3 200 Quebec QMJHL
2. NAIL YAKUPOV (LW) 5'10 189 Sarnia OHL
3. FILIP FORSBERG (RW) 6'1 176 Leksands SWE
4. RYAN MURRAY (D) 6'0 201 Everett WHL (His guest blog HERE)
5. MATT DUMBA (D) 5'11 183 Red Deer WHL

and according to Central Scouting:
http://www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=75380

It's impressive that you can already do that. I have to admit, of those 15 players, I only know even the most basic info about Yakupov, Grigorenko, Galchenyuk, Forsberg, Murray, Frk, Reilly, and Reinhart. All the others I obviously know the names, but have no idea as to their games, strengths and weaknesses, etc.

Do we have any roster spots open on the right wing?

I tend to watch a LOT of junior league webcasts when I'm pissed off at how the team is playing. The only other teams in the league I really give a **** about are Edmonton and Nashville so if there's an intriguing junior game I can find a stream for I'm watching it.

It's the weakest position on our team and in our entire system.

Why does ISS have Frk so low? And Ebert...

And I thought Galchenyuk centered the line Yakupov was on?

Ok--I don't want him over any of the big guys at the top, but if he fell, for some reason, to the 2nd--the Canes should really get:

20. ZEMGUS GIRGENSONS (C) 6'1 201 Dubuque USHL

I don't know how he plays and frankly don't care--it's just a great name. Or maybe the name of some food borne pathogen--either way....

Ryan Murray and Ryan Murphy possibly on the same team playing the same position seems like it would be too confusing.

Only after we trade Tim Gleason to Minnesota for Justin Falk and a 2nd.

Suter is improbable, but based on that lineup and the money we will need to spend; we could afford to throw a nice contract his way.

Wait, I forget, UFA or RFA? Because if he's a UFA, we definitely have at least a CHANCE. Either way it won't happen...

EDIT: Just checked, UFA. Interesting that him and Weber are basically the same age, but Weber's going to be an RFA. Seems like he's been in the league a LOT longer than Suter, so seems like whatever the restricted FA rules are would've passed him sooner. Oh well...

He's a UFA, and I think it's all but done that Gleason is gone. I don't know that we'd re-sign Allen either, but put him in Suter's spot if he does re-sign. There's A LOT of room in the budget to make Suter happen.

I also think the Canes should take a look at drafting Cody Ceci, for some reason he jumps out at me. I'm not sold on Ryan Murphy. His concussion/injury history and being cut from the Canadian team really turn me off.

I believe Åberg is also a RW, at least in the few games I've seen him play.

Would be damn nice if we could pull off a trade that gives us another 1st round pick. I'd love to get Åberg/Frk/Collberg in addition to Yakupov/Grigorenko.

Assuming we get a top 5 pick this year my list for the canes would be:

1. Grigorenko
2. Yakupov
3. Murray
4. Forsberg
5. Dumba

We get any of these players and we get a very good player. I think Grigorenko has Malkin type of potential, and depth down the middle is the way to have success in the NHL, so i take him first. If Grigorenko is gone, then you cant pass up on Yakupov, who is a very dynamic player who plays with a lot of energy. I would have put Forsberg next, but i dont think you can pass up on Murray, who is one of the best and most well rounded defenceman i have seen in a long time. Forsberg seems like a top line NHLer at some point, and is probably the most NHL player in the draft imo. Dumba is a raw talent with lots of upside, but he might take a bit longer to develop.

Serious question, if we could add either Ovechkin or Malkin to the Hurricanes roster right now, which would you choose?

Is that really what we're looking at with Yakupov/Grigorenko this year? Because if it is, as much as I love Nail Yakupov -- for his name and his style of play -- I think a real good argument could be made that we'd be better off with a center like Malkin and his ability to control the puck and make plays.

I agree. And I'd be fine with picking either Grigorenko or Gaunce (if we fall that far) for that reason. But that said, I honestly think we're weaker on the right wing then we are down the middle somehow.

Left wing we'll be fine since we have Bowman (who's playing well so far), Boychuk, Terry, and Shugg in the system to complement Jokinen and Skinner. Down the middle all we're missing is that #2 guy. But on the right we have nothing depth wise past Ruutu and Dalpe that wouldn't be asking someone to overplay what their ability level is (LaRose, Dwyer, Stewart)

I haven't started really investing into this draft yet, but one thing I can say for certain is that I am not interested in any of the defenders at the top because I feel like what we have in house is good enough to produce 2 or 3 NHL players of various degrees. The forwards are the problem. We need to roll the dice on a difference maker.

Never draft to need.

One trade can change the entire depth of the organization.

The successful teams draft best pick available, not by need. Look at Nashville. They keep on drafting defensemen, and keep on posting competitive teams on a sh
