I think we'll take at least one of Lukas Sutter, Matia Marcantuoni or Tom Wilson in the second.

I think we can probably get Marcantuoni with our 3rd.

Sutter I think is a lock for us, if not at 38 then at 46 or whatever it is.

Wilson... I'd love him to be there at 38 but odds are he goes first round.

Brady Vail (2nd) and Nick Ebert (4th) are two more to keep an eye on. And Thomas Spelling is one the Canes interviewed last year that we may draft as an overager. He won the Danish league's rookie of the year last year with 29 points in 39 games, and 7 in 11 for their playoffs. Well this year he put up 37 in 33 and 14 in 13 in their playoffs. Fairly good size too at 6'1/179

I would be INCREDIBLY surprised if we didn't draft Lukas, so much so that I'd bet we take him early in the 2nd just to be sure someone else doesn't steal him before we pick again.

I agree.

What is the deal with Wilson though? Are people high on him because he's big and tough (and for the Canes, a Whaler)?. Serious question as I haven't seen him play, but he doesn't seem to be much of a scorer. From everything I read on him, seems like a bottom 6 guy at best to me.

Dave and/or Vagrant or someone...can you shed some more light on this guy?

Assuming the Sharks don't make the Final Four, their 2nd round pick will be 49th overall, ours will be 38th Sutter's final ranking is 39th according to this

Probably almost a guarantee we take with with our pick, very doubtful he falls 11 spots to San Jose's pick.

Wilson's big, tough, physical, and projectable. IMO he probably has 3rd line upside, but worst case he is a decent checking line player. In a draft like this, that's more then you can say for almost everyone else in the 20-30 range.

I don't see the offense with Wilson but I like his size and physicality. I expect you're right Dave, and someone will take him in the first. Probably Toronto.

I wouldn't want to take him that high as he projects as a 3rd liner, possibly a second if his offense translates. He does seem like a pretty safe bet to become an nhl'er one day, though.

Not sure what Craig Button is smoking. His latest draft rankings released today have Murray at 12, Trouba at 13 and Grigorenko at 14.

Murray and Grigorenko will probably go 2 & 3.

The list you quote has him as the #38 NA skater. Taking into account the Euros he probably projects at about 52 or so overall. But I agree that we will probably take him at 38 regardless.

No shi*. Matt Finn.

This list does amplify what a ridiculously top heavy lot this is for defenseman though. Luckily at least 4 of the teams ahead of us need defensive help big time, so we should get a quality impact forward. If not then Dumba or Murray might be sitting there when #8 rolls around.

TBH I would be quite happy if we drafted him. It's bizarre to see him shoot up the draft boards so late in the year, it makes me think that perhaps the hype is warranted...

I wouldn't mind a fast rising Finnish winger. Sounds almost custom made for this team, except for maybe not being an elite scoring talent.

Interesting that the write up on him said that he is likely to play RW when he gets to the NHL. He could fill a huge hole for us on the right someday. Also, him being one of the youngest players eligible for the draft is nice...would be nice if he could grow another couple inches though.

I'd think him being one of the youngest players in the draft is part of the reason why he's rising so much lately... He's projected to be 180-182cm's in height, isn't that just below 6'?

I'm not convinced that he can't be that scoring talent though. He's the youngest top prospect in this draft and his numbers are rather stunted because he plays on what's probably the best team in Finland and likely one of the top 5 or 6 in all of Europe. Compare to similar prospects in recent years in their draft year, like Armia, it's pretty easy to see which one was more likely to get prime time to show what they have offensively.

It's Teravainen's playoffs though that really have me psyched if he's our pick. His first real shot at top line ice time this year and he's taken it and ran with it.

5'11 to 5'11.5

FWIW, that's the same size as Nail, and he doesn't play with the same physical style that Nail does.

Bear with my crazy thought processes here for a minute, please.

In a completely hypothetical situation that has about 0 chance of actually happening...

What if JR was able to figure out everybody's pick ahead of us, trade for the #whatever pick (9-13 or wherever) that Faksa will end up going if we pick Teravainen?

What would that cost to acquire? We all seem to be pretty intrigued by Lukas Sutter with either our first or second pick in the second round, so we would hypothetically have two second round picks to trade. We could also trade a roster player or one of our defensemen that's lying in the wings. With the low-end talent of this draft, that defenseman/roster player would probably be more intriguing than a player that might not turn out to anything.

So...what would it take to trade with a team to get that pick? What would Winnipeg, Tampa, Washington, Buffalo, or Dallas want for that pick (depending on where Faksa might go)?

I don't think we could pull it off without having to send Faulk or Sutter, in which case I'd rather hang onto the proven commodity.

McBain + 2nd + future 2nd is probably the closest we could do without having to ship either of those two. And odds are a team like Buffalo or Winnipeg won't be in ANY hurry to help us land Faksa.
