One service has us taking Morgan Rielly, D, Moose Jaw (WHL), I just can't see any way in hell we take a D in the first round this year, no matter what... JR hates to draft D in the first round as is and until we do some sorting out of Dumo, Faulk, Murphy, Levi, Alt, McBain, etc, I can't imagine a first round pick going to the D
If I had my choice of defensemen for the CANES to take with that 8th pick, they'd be:
Murray
Reinhart
Dumba
Trouba
Rielly
Finn
In that order. We need size or an all-around defenseman if we're going to take one at all. We don't need another one-dimensional PMD. That's why Murray's on top (great both ways). Reinhart's a big boy, I like that, Dumba can absolutely smash people (I recall some on these boards saying it wouldn't translate, but I disagree), then Trouba's just got some great athleticism. No reason to draft the best offensive defenseman in the draft two years in a row, which is why Rielly's down there, then Finn is up simply because while he's more of an offensive guy, he's been rising a ton all year, and it tends to be the risers that become the best NHL players.
But yeah, don't draft a forward. Faksa or Teravainen or Gaunce or Galchenyuk or trade for Parise's rights, please.

Trouba/Dumba/Reinhart >>>>>>>> Levi, Alt
Rielly is and offensive defenseman, so we won't take him. Dumba and Trouba are more defensively sound.
problem with Reilly is that he's a mostly offensive dman as well. With Murphy, Mcbain and Faulk being that type of guy seems even more unlikely. Still, I say bpa and let it figure itself out. If one of these dmen are better than faksa I'd rather take the d.
To whoever said Edmonton's goaltending is a joke, I'm not so sure. Dubnyk's turning out to be a starting-caliber goaltender, and with talent like that in front of them they won't NEED an All-Star between the pipes, just a top 30 goaltender. I think Dubnyk's their guy, TBH.

Their defense makes their goaltending look like a joke.

He played better since Christmas but he gives up way too many soft goals imo.

Dubnyk isn't Lundqvist good where he can consistently steal games despite a bad D, or even Ward good where he can consistently keep his team in the game despite a bad D.
Their best defensive prospect is Klefblom, who is at least 2 years away from making the NHL, much less having an impact. Their best "young" defensman is Jeff Petry, who is a watered down version of McBain.
To win Cups, you need elite level goaltending. I don't see the group that the Oilers have providing that at all.
Is it time for a new mock draft from Dave/somebody else since the Oil got the sweet end of the deal (again)?
I think so.
Wait a sec. Would the Oilers trade down with somebody for a decent sum in order to draft their defenseman and get some good pieces in return? I'd have to think they'd need a defenseman more than they need Nail.

To get anywhere in the playoffs, you need a goaltender playing at an elite level- elite goaltending.
It can come from an actual elite goaltender (like Thomas), a hot goaltender (like Niemi) or a goaltender that is constantly bailed out by his amazing D-corp (like Leighton or Emery in the Finals).
Nothing about the Oilers makes me think they can accomplish any of the above. In fact, their d is so atrocious that I would say that, even with Dubnyk playing at an elite level, they are still barely a bubble team.
I feel bad for the Oilers. Everyone hates them (including me), and they are probably going to miss out on the next generational player in MacKinnon. They'll probably pick 20th-25th next year, and have to start paying their core group of forwards.

Now you're thinkin'.
The Canes have some fine young defensemen in the pipeline, and a #8 pick would probably get the Oilers as much as they are looking for this year.

I wasn't implying that the Oilers would be trading with the Canes, but since you brought it up...
JR's top-line winger=Nail Yakupov?
I would expect the Oilers to want a defenseman that would contribute right away, probably somebody who could...I don't know...actually play defense rather than their ragtag group of fail on the back end. Options for a trade with the Oilers?

8th + McBain + Boychuk could get it done.
(For the record, not in the "OMG trade McBain" group, I'm actually against it unless we get a good trade. Nail Yakupov is worth the above trade IMO).
