Sexton could actually turn in to a pretty good player, his biggest downfall (his beer league shot) is something that could be improved with proper training. I swear he had at least 10-15 grade A opportunities, that he flat out flub because his shot is so weak. If he improves on that, I could see him as a decent depth scorer.
Murray should offer sheet Stamkos. If we don't get him, then who cares? There is no downside. If we do, then awesome. More winning=more butts in seats=more money=we can afford him. That and Getzlaf/Stamkos would be the best 1-2punch in the league center-wise outside of Crosby/Malkin.
The potential downside is that teams have said if you offersheet our players, we will hunt your RFA's and UFA's. I would rather offer sheet stamkos with the 1% chance we get him, just to have the same occur to Fowler in a couple years.
Sexton is a player I don't have a lot of faith in but he's also not a player like Ryan Carter where I'm comfortable with losing him. Two years will be enough time to for him to sink or swim. Either he makes it work in Anaheim this year, or depth pushes him to the AHL and he works on his game/shot. Then the year after we can see what a more seasoned Sexton can (or can't) do.
I just don't see a place for Sexton. He gets pushed around because of his size and his shot does not make up for it. I don't know where you put him. He is not good enough for the first two lines and he is too small for the bottom two lines.
Sexton fills a hole honestly. He'll take a roster spot on that third line rw that was once a ???. He has tremendous speed and when he's on his game, he has a nice scoring touch, he just has to get his sh** together. Since day one he's reminded me of Andy McDonald, and if he can hit that potential, then we've got a gem on our hands.
But as of right now...he needs to work on his game or he'll be making the AHL his home.
Meh. Hopefully he's in the AHL this year and is our thirteenth forward next year. His shot and tunnel vision will hold him back from ever being a top 6 forward. So many times he would skate up the ice at full speed only to throw a weak shot on net from the wing because he doesn't have the vision or playmaking ability to do anything else.
Since day one he's reminded me of Andy McDonald, and if he can hit that potential, then we've got a gem on our hands.
The only thing Sexton and McDonald have in common are that both are small (Sexton moreso than McDonald) and fast. McDonald's playmaking ability, vision, intelligence and shooting ability are all miles ahead of Sexton.
if he could improve his shot we could have a good player on our hands... mcmillan/sexton had some decent chemistry but sexton had 0 finish... he has imo decent hands.. just a brutal shot.. up his shot/strength and i think we have a decent 3rd line RW on our hands if we decide to go with 3 scoring lines
