If that's what our defense will look in the next 2 years, I give up.

Why? If Larsson and Fayne continue to develop that could be a solid core. You can't change these things overnight

So, how do we magically become an elite defensive unit in 2 years then?

Trade for one in the next 2 seasons? Not sure why that's opposed over a two year span.

Hell maybe go sign a UFA, we didn't have Volch and Tallinder penciled in a few years back.

2 years is definitely not overnight or a short period of time. Our D will probably look very different.

In 2 years, Larsson will be an elite, impact defenceman. I have no doubt about that.

Greene, Tallinder and Volchenkov are all still here in 2 years barring trade. Larrson will be here and it's pretty much a given that Fayne will be as well. Volchenkov can't be traded, I'm not sure you can get much of an improvement from trading Tallinder or Greene. And unless Henrique, Tedenby or Josefson get traded our forward crop can't be traded for an improvement either.

I don`t like making changes for the sake of making them, but I firmly believe this defense will need a shakeup. Larsson, Fayne and Volchenkov (depends) should stay (personnel-wise, contract-wise, talent-wise). Others can go, sooner or later. But we have to replace them with BETTER players. No more steps back, please.

My take on the defense is pretty straight-forward:

3 Mobile/Transition Defensemen
1 Powerplay Defenseman
1 Shutdown Defenseman
1 Physical Defenseman

From my perspective, we've got three defenseman who should be a part of this going forward, no questions asked:

Physical - Volchenkov
Mobile - Fayne
Mobile (Powerplay?) - Larsson

That means we're missing 1 mobile defenseman (Greene, Tallinder fill that role right now), 1 powerplay defenseman (nobody fills that spot right now), and 1 shutdown defenseman (Salvador, Tallinder fill that role right now).

Personally, my ideal (in the short term) would be something like adding Enstrom, Mitchell, and keeping Greene/Tallinder.

If any way possible, would like to see Suter in a Devils jersey next season.

That would be nice too, but that still leaves us short a true PP defenseman.

Suter would be amazing, but I won't get too hyped up on that dream yet.

If Merrill plays again, he seems like a great puck distributor for PP scenarios.

Weber will go before Suter I think just because there's was little effort to avoid arbitration and he was clearly getting lowballed to all hell. I'd love him here but *girlish sigh* it just isn't meant to be...

Weber is an upcoming RFA, Suter is an upcoming UFA. That doesn't mean Suter is leaving, but it does mean that Nashville can certainly keep Weber for a season while they can't certainly keep Suter.

We need a upgrade and I'm sick and tired of those tweeners being brought in just to fill a roster spot. Tallinder and Volchenkov will regress in the next 2 years and Greene is very inconsistent. We need a minute eating PP QB. Are they easy to find, of course not. Are they available, yes they are.

Fayne and Larsson are heading in the right direction but we can't expect them to lead the way all the time and not screw up every now and then. The fact that our two youngest blueliners are our best blueliners is pretty alarming to me.

If 24 months isn't enough time for Lou to improve our defensive core, how much time is too much time? Someone like Lubomir Visnovsky would be a example of a player I'd love to have on our blueline. His age might scare some posters away but he's the type of player this team needs. Mark Streit is also turning UFA at the end of the 2012/13 season and would be another solid option.

We don't need a Shea Weber, although it would be FANTASTIC, we need a player that can log 20+ minutes and help our mediocre transition game/PP. I really don't think it's too much to ask in a time where puck possession is key in today's NHL.

You see, I agree with all this. We do need a real PP defenseman. We have since we lost Rafalski. Larsson could become one, but there's no guarantee.

Visnovsky isn't going anywhere, he has a NTC and doesn't want to leave southern California. I'd also rather not wait until the 2013 offseason to pick one up.

His PP skills are underrated. With Larsson in the mix, it could be enough.

I would love to see Weber or Suter here, but with Nashville hellbent on keeping them, and our own cap problems, I don't think it will happen.

Which is cool to see Lou wants Voynov. Seems like he is out and finally looking to address the team issue.

It actually wouldn't be hard at all. We've got a ton of cap space this coming offseason. It would make things harder the following offseason, though, when our young'uns need new contracts.

salary cap wise we would be fine

money wise I doubt we could re-sign Parise long term and sign Suter long term, unless this ownership situation gets sorted out...and soon.

CAPGEEK.COM CAP CALCULATOR

FORWARDS
Zach Parise ($0.000m) / Travis Zajac ($3.887m) / Dainius Zubrus ($3.400m)
Ilya Kovalchuk ($6.666m) / Adam Henrique ($0.854m) / Jacob Josefson ($0.900m)
Mattias Tedenby ($0.875m) / Patrik Elias ($6.000m) / David Clarkson ($2.666m)
Eric Boulton ($0.662m) / Ryan Carter ($0.750m) / Vladimir Zharkov ($0.635m)
/ 4th Line Center ($0.000m) / Cam Janssen ($0.525m)

DEFENSEMEN
Andy Greene ($3.000m) / Adam Larsson ($0.925m)
Henrik Tallinder ($3.375m) / Mark Fayne ($0.000m)
Alexander Urbom ($0.856m) / Anton Volchenkov ($4.250m)
Defenseman ($0.000m)

GOALTENDERS
Johan Hedberg ($1.250m) / Goaltender ($0.000m)

BUYOUTS: Colin White ($1.000m) / Trent Hunter ($0.666m)

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled using the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $43,146,084; BONUSES: $572,500
CAP SPACE (23-man roster): $21,726,416

With absolutely no rise in the cap, we've got $22M to add a goaltender, re-sign Parise, re-sign Fayne, and add a defenseman. I'm assuming Janssen and Carter re-up at the same price, and Zharkov signs his qualifier.

The question is money.
