Time Warner / MSG Situation (Resolved 2/17, game tonight to air on TWC)

http://www.bizjournals.com/mobile/bu...sg-settle.html

Quote:
The Buffalo Sabres, whose TV broadcasts could potentially be caught in the middle of tense negotiations between Time Warner Cable* * and the MSG Network, said they remain hopeful the rift can be resolved without hockey fans being shut out from watching televised games.

Time Warner Cable and the MSG Network, the Sabres’ cable TV broadcast producer, are currently in contract talks. Time Warner is balking at paying higher rates to carry MSG. The MSG Network, while based in New York City and owned by Madison Square Garden interests, has been carrying the Buffalo Sabres games for six seasons.

The current Time Warner Cable/MSG Network expires on Jan. 1.

Pisses me off. That's all. Isn't MSG already blocked from one provider? Or is that what they're discussing?

It was dish network. Not sure if they resolved the issue or not.

Every year Time Warner has an issue going towards the new year and every year they work out a deal before expiration. Hope this isnt any different.

Still not on Dish. It's Dolan and MSG's loss. The Sabres need to break from MSG.....

Time Warner really does not want to do this. FiOS just got MSG HD. They can't possibly give people more of a reason to jump ship. Hopefully everything is resolved soon.

So Direct and Fios (which is not available in my are) are the only two carriers that will definitely carry Sabres games come January 1st? Dish still hasn't resolved their dispute with MSG? Which is why I switched to Time Warner a year ago.

As said above, this isnt new.

TW will run a PR campaign about "giving in or getting tough", but in the end no matter what we "tell them" to do, the cost will be pushed to us.

Guess I'd have a guest every game night if it comes to it

Seriously though Time Warner fights with everyone. MSG, NFL Network, Fox (which was resolved) just to name a few. They need to get their act together.

The cost was already passed on to us. The December 1st rate hike made me switch to DirecTV.

Correct. If TW drops MSG, DTV and VZ would be your only choices.

John Ourand from SBJ had a series of tweets last night breaking down the situation.

This is stupid on both sides. However it seems like MSG has more to lose. I'd like to see the percentage of their customers that have DTV and Fios compared to Time Warner. I'd be willing to bet 70%-80% of people who are watching MSG are doing so on cable. Maybe conservatively 50%. They just can't cut loose that many viewers. As for people switching providers like MSG wants them to, I'd be willing to bet that most people who can switch to Fios and who care about this have done so. But for many people Fios is just not an option because the wiring didn't reach their area. DTV requires a 2 year contract that people will balk at. Where I live there is no Fios and DTV doesn't have local channels so neither is an option.

TWC says MSG is trying to bundle Fuse with the RSN. It calls Fuse "a music network that is watched by .06% of our customers."

It's the same crap they pulled with Dish Network. You can't have MSG unless you buy this Garbage . Holding Sabres fans Hostage. And Pegula and Black let them. I hope TWC stands it's ground.

Pegula and Black have just about no say in the matter.

I'm sure this will end the same way as every other expiring contract that Time Warner has ever had.
We'll see advertisements about it constantly and a deal will be struck last minute.

Not worried.

The only thing they could even remotely do is threaten not to renew a contract with msg when the current one expires. I don't even know how much weight that threat would carry because I don't know how long they are under contract with msg.

The difference is dish network has comparatively few subscribers, while the majority of people who watch MSG do so on cable.

I wish there was still a Local sports station like empire. I hate that the Sabres play on a NYC channel. At least now there is a pregame and post game, but I wish there was a lot more Sabres stuff. I would watch a top 10 Sabres vs Habs preseason games of the 1990s if it was on lol.

Oh yeah - I saw my internet go up another $2 this month

I get free cable in my complex, so I don't see the cable side.

They are already being missed by people with Dish Network... and what choice does he have? Short of buying either MSG (very unlikely) or buying Time Warner Cable (probably even less likely) he doesn't have many options. He is under contract with MSG as far as I know that they get the airing rights of the Sabres games that aren't on national TV.
